When filming with a teleprompter, you typically have three choices: find someone to manually scroll the text for you, use an app that auto-scrolls and hope you can keep up, or operate a remote control which can be distracting and comes at a cost. We were thrilled to discover Teleprompt.me, a voice-activated teleprompter that actually works. We previously mentioned it, but now we've tested it on camera to show you just how smooth it really is. In this video, no one is controlling the teleprompter!
As you'll see, Teleprompt.me proves difficult to fool, even with uncommon last names and non-dictionary terms. It managed to keep pace as I spoke quickly, and it didn’t glitch when I skipped or added a few words to my script. Honestly, it's impressive to find an app that performs this well.
The teleprompter has standard features such as mirroring, allowing you to connect it to a professional teleprompter camera setup. You can also use it for webcam recordings, or place it beside a regular camera on your laptop.
Drawbacks
There are just two notable downsides: First, Teleprompt.me only works on Chrome for desktop, meaning you can't use it with those cool smartphone teleprompter mirrors. To use such a setup, you'll need to purchase an app like the $20 voice-activated PromptSmart Pro (iOS/Android).
Secondly, there are no voice commands like “restart” or “go back.” So, if you need to do retakes, you’ll have to use the arrow keys. But this is something you'd need to do with other software as well.
Aside from that, there are only minor issues: The microphone could interfere with any audio playing on your computer during recording. It's best to add the audio separately. Also, it only shows plain text—no italics or varied font sizes.
Since the site needs access to your computer’s microphone, it will continue to listen until you close the tab or adjust your permissions. It also saves the script you've pasted until you clear your cache. So, don’t use it to read aloud sensitive information.
If you encounter a script that Teleprompt.me can't handle, there are several free alternatives that use buttons or set speeds, like CuePrompter and Autocue. However, Teleprompt.me is so effective that we plan to use it for all our scripted videos in the Mytour studio.
