Best Overall
Aura Mason Digital Frame
PHOTO: AmazonThis frame provides unlimited storage and comes with convenient smart features.
The sound for each video must be manually activated.
The Aura Mason ticks all the boxes for an excellent digital picture frame: stunning display, powerful features, and limitless cloud storage. It can be used in both portrait and landscape modes, adjusting automatically when rotated, and includes smart auto-cropping to accommodate all photo orientations. Additionally, the frame's stylish speckled design is both elegant and understated, avoiding a techy appearance.
During our testing, we were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get started. All we had to do was connect the Aura Mason to our Wi-Fi network, download the Aura app, and start uploading photos. You can even invite others to upload pictures to your account. Just keep in mind that, due to cloud connectivity, a Wi-Fi connection is required to use it.
The screen automatically adjusts its brightness based on the surrounding light, and it supports videos up to 30 seconds long. However, by default, videos are muted, so you'll need to manually enable the sound for each one. It's also important to note that there is no touchscreen; instead, you’ll use the touch bar for control. On the bright side, this design avoids fingerprints, so we don’t mind the absence of a touchscreen. Although it's the priciest model in our selection, its performance justifies the cost. For a more affordable option, we recommend the Aura Carver, which features a larger screen but slightly lower resolution.

Aeezo Wi-Fi Enabled Digital Picture Frame
PHOTO: Courtesy of AmazonThe classic frame design fits seamlessly with a variety of interior styles.
The image resolution could be sharper.
If ultra-high resolution or endless storage isn't a priority for you, this simple yet effective Aeezo digital frame is a great choice. Equipped with 16GB of internal storage, it can hold around 40,000 photos—ample space for the average user. What impressed us most was its design. It resembles a traditional frame more than a tech device, and the wood-like finish paired with the white rim gives the photos a matted effect.
We found the settings to be extremely user-friendly: Simply connect to Wi-Fi and upload images via the app. Friends and family can contribute their photos, and the frame plays a notification sound when new images are added. Unlike some models that require complete app control, this one allows you to use the touchscreen to scroll through photos, delete images, pause the slideshow, and adjust brightness. It also automatically adjusts the photos to fit the frame's orientation (vertical or horizontal), shrinking them as needed instead of cropping.
The 1,280 by 800 resolution is decent but not exceptional—during testing, we observed that the images on the frame weren't as sharp as on our phone. While this could be a dealbreaker for some, we still consider it a solid choice for a gallery wall or bookshelf, as the image quality is better when viewed from a distance. We also appreciate that it supports video uploads, though it limits videos to 15 seconds. For a budget-friendly option, this frame offers great features.

Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen)
PHOTO: Courtesy of B&HBeyond showcasing photos, this smart device can manage lighting, set reminders, play music, stream videos, and monitor sleep patterns.
Due to its stand design, it can only be used in a horizontal orientation.
If you're already using or planning to incorporate smart home devices, the Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the perfect digital photo frame for you. As the name suggests, it seamlessly syncs with other smart devices, acting as a central hub. In addition to showcasing photos and videos, this device offers control over your lighting, alarm settings, music playback, movie streaming, calendar management, and much more. We especially loved how it can pull up recipes, displaying them while we cooked.
Our favorite feature is the sleep sensor. Sleep Sensing generates a daily report that tracks your sleep cycle, showing when you fell asleep, woke up, and how long you rested. It even measures your respiratory rate and snoring. For those who aren't fans of wearable sleep trackers, this is a great alternative for improving your sleep patterns.
Even with its extensive features, we admire the frame’s understated design. While it does have a modern tech aesthetic, its minimalist style fit nicely with our home decor. The main drawback we encountered is that the Google Nest Hub can only be used in horizontal mode, not vertical. However, considering its impressive smart functions, this is a minor inconvenience.

With the Google Nest Hub, you can easily display your favorite photos, listen to music, and enjoy many other features.
Mytour / Rebecca ParkOur Process of Testing
To select the best digital picture frames, we tested 12 different models at home. Each frame was evaluated based on its display quality, features, and overall value. We started by timing the setup process and photo uploads, considering how user-friendly the entire process was. Where possible, we also assessed how easily multiple users could upload photos. Each frame was then rated on aesthetics and display options such as orientation, wall-mounting ability, and power cord length.
Next, we examined the physical display of each frame, paying attention to clarity, brightness, and color accuracy. For frames that supported video, we tested their playback performance, uploading various video sizes and rating the quality. Additionally, we evaluated the audio capabilities of each frame. For smart frames with extra functionalities, we tested features such as clocks, calendars, streaming services, and video call capabilities. Lastly, we assessed each frame's value by considering whether the price was reasonable.
Certain digital picture frames offer smart features, including streaming services, calendars, and the ability to make video calls.

Storage Options
Digital picture frames can either use a memory card for storage or rely on cloud-based storage. However, most frames have a storage limit, unless you opt to purchase additional space. It's important to consider how many photos you wish to display and ensure the storage capacity meets your needs. For instance, the Aura Mason offers unlimited storage, while the Aeezo Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame comes with only 16GB of space.
Another factor to keep in mind is the method for uploading your photos. You can send them to the cloud through email or by using an online uploader. For frames that rely on memory cards, you'll need to transfer images from your camera to the card, usually by connecting it to a computer.
If you want to enable family and friends to upload photos to your frame, focusing on models with cloud storage is essential. Gordon highlights that some apps also offer social features, letting loved ones comment on the pictures.
Display & Orientation
When selecting a display, there are three crucial elements to keep in mind: orientation, aspect ratio, and resolution.
Start by considering orientation—can the frame be used both vertically and horizontally, or just in one direction? When frames support both portrait and landscape modes, displaying images in the opposite direction may cause pillar boxing (black bars appearing on the edges to preserve the image's aspect ratio). We appreciated that the Aeezo Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame automatically adjusted photos by shrinking them instead of cropping them.
Next, consider the aspect ratio, which defines the image's dimensions. Most phone photos typically fit a 4:3 ratio, though other common formats include 5:4 and 16:9. If your photos don't match the frame's aspect ratio, pillar boxing could happen here as well.
Resolution is key to how crisp and detailed the screen appears. Larger screens generally need a higher resolution to maintain sharpness, while smaller screens can get by with a lower resolution and still deliver clear images. For instance, the Aeezo Wi-Fi Digital Picture Frame has the largest display at 10.1 inches, but we found its resolution slightly weaker than some other models. Meanwhile, the Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen, with its smaller 7-inch display, remained impressively sharp. We recommend at least a 1080p resolution for optimal clarity.
Customization
Your digital frame settings should offer several customization options, though these can vary depending on the model. According to Gordon, "A digital photo frame cycles through a selected group of photos, based on its storage space, and allows you to adjust settings like the time between photos and transition effects." If you prefer specific display adjustments, ensure that the frame allows for such customization.
More Digital Picture Frames to Consider
Aura Carver 10.1-Inch WiFi Digital Picture Frame: This frame is simple to set up, offers unlimited cloud storage, and can play videos up to 30 seconds long. Its companion app makes managing and editing photos easy. However, it lacks a touchscreen and can only be displayed horizontally.
Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen): This device is equipped with a built-in camera and microphone, allowing you to make and receive video calls. It offers much more than a typical photo frame. However, the white cord didn’t quite match our decor, and the setup process was somewhat complicated.
Nixplay 9.7-Inch Smart Digital Photo Frame: This frame boasts a high-resolution display, unlimited cloud storage, and extra features such as video support, motion detection, and automatic adjustments to fit each image perfectly. The setup was a bit tricky, and its price point is on the higher side.
While some frames resemble tech gadgets, others come with a more discreet, traditional look.
Mytour / Cathy FalloneQuestions You Might Ask
Can digital picture frames operate without Wi-Fi?
While most digital picture frames rely on Wi-Fi to access cloud-stored images, there are alternatives that don't need Wi-Fi. Some frames use memory cards or USB drives to store photos, allowing them to function independently. However, all models on our list require Wi-Fi.
What features should be prioritized when selecting a digital picture frame?
Digital picture frames offer a range of features—some are designed only for photo display, while others provide additional functions. When picking the right model, consider which features are most important to you.
Many digital picture frames have video support, but there may be restrictions on video duration, typically between 15 seconds to two minutes. If video playback is essential, confirm that the frame supports this feature. Some models also include sound functions, while others operate silently. The Aura Mason allows videos up to 30 seconds, but you need to activate sound manually for each clip.
For those seeking a smarter frame, we suggest the Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen). It serves as both a digital photo frame and a smart device, seamlessly integrating with other smart gadgets to control lighting, set alarms, play music, stream movies, and monitor your sleep. Another advanced choice we love is the Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen), which comes with a speaker and camera, allowing you to make and receive video calls.
Do digital picture frames come with privacy features?
Many digital picture frame manufacturers implement privacy protections, though the level of coverage varies significantly. Gordon explains that some companies add privacy features to their products: "For instance, Nixplay is a well-regarded digital photo frame maker that encrypts your photos during transfers. Others, like Aura, offer the option to remove metadata from your images, such as when and where they were captured. Consumers should check for these privacy features in the terms and conditions provided by the companies before using their devices. If unsure, avoid the device."
If your digital photo frame operates over Wi-Fi, there's always a risk it could be hacked. Even if you don't mind hackers accessing your pictures, Gordon warns that the frame could be exploited as a gateway to your phone or computer, potentially giving cybercriminals access to even more personal data.
