A dog is often called a person's best friend, or so the saying goes. But that bond can be tested when a dog starts barking at an empty corner, a door, or any space where there appears to be no reason for it. Is the dog seeing something we can’t? Is it in contact with beings from another dimension? Or is it just trying to push its owner to the edge of their patience?
According to the American Kennel Club, the most common explanation for this mysterious barking is that it’s not truly random. In fact, it’s likely that humans are simply unaware of the visual, auditory, or scent-based signals the dog is responding to.
Dogs are known for their incredible sense of hearing, particularly their ability to detect high-pitched sounds. It's possible that a dog is reacting to a sound—like a distant siren—that a person nearby cannot hear.
If a dog barks unexpectedly at night, it may be because the surrounding noise has diminished, making them more sensitive to the sounds of other dogs howling and barking. Since dogs are territorial, one dog’s bark can quickly set off many others.
Dogs have superior night vision compared to humans, as they can gather more light in their retinas. So, if a dog barks at what seems like an empty backyard at night, they might be reacting to something you can’t see, like a wild animal, a rustling leaf, or even a serial killer.
That being said, dogs don’t only bark in response to sensory triggers. Some dogs may bark out of boredom, indicating they need more exercise or playtime. They might also be trying to grab their owner’s attention.
The AKC advises against scolding dogs for barking, as they are simply trying to stay alert. Instead, offer reassurance to let them know you acknowledge their concern. If they bark while watching out a window, try blocking their view with curtains. If the barking is triggered by sound, some white noise like a TV or radio could help.
Occasionally, persistent barking can be a sign of cognitive issues. If the barking continues and no intruders are around, it might be worth scheduling a visit to the vet.
