A month has passed since we started our challenge to find a fitness trail, parcourse, or outdoor exercise equipment near you. The one at my park offers a solid full-body workout, and I’ve been running it weekly. What did you uncover?
I’ve been hitting the trail every Monday this month, usually completing two loops, which takes about 40 minutes. I’ve definitely made progress. At first, I needed a minute to catch my breath after each rep of the jumping zigzag exercise, but recently I managed to do it three times in a row.
During my latest visit (which I promise won’t be the last!), I even brought my eight-year-old son along. Pro tip: don’t tell kids it’s a workout; call it an obstacle course. We took turns on some of the equipment, and I lifted him up to the pull-up bar. He loved the balance beam—my favorite, too—and tried to spot fish in the creek we cross between stations 11 and 12. By station 14, he was ready to go home, but by the end, he was asking when we could come back.
I hope we weren’t the only ones having fun exploring this month. Did you come across a retro fitness trail, or, if not, find a playground or other equipment that made for a good workout? Did you try any new moves? Don’t forget to compare your first visit to the course with the last one—if you managed to go faster, do more moves, or take fewer breaks, that’s a win!
Update 5/30/2018 4:57pm: We previously featured this post with an image of people walking on railroad tracks. Please avoid doing this. It's hazardous.
