Since Mario Badescu’s pink facial spray went viral on social media, face mists have developed into a distinct category in skincare. With a variety of options ranging from refreshing mists to setting sprays, the question remains: do these products offer more than just a fun delivery method, or are they simply overpriced water in a bottle? We reached out to dermatologists for answers.
What Are Face Mists?
According to Mamina Turegano
As with all skincare, understanding the ingredients in each product is crucial. “Facial mists are primarily water-based sprays designed to deliver a variety of ingredients to the skin, with hydration being the most common benefit,” explains Rachel Nazarian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. “Many hydrating mists include hyaluronic acid, while others feature calming, anti-inflammatory ingredients that help soothe irritated skin. These mists are particularly beneficial for individuals with dry or sensitive skin, as well as those with conditions like eczema and rosacea.”

A face mist is essentially a sprayable version of a serum. While everyone can benefit from the hydration it offers, those with dry or dehydrated skin are most likely to notice a significant difference immediately. “It's not a must-have in your skincare routine, but a facial mist can enhance other aspects, improving ingredient absorption and locking them in,” explains Dr. Nazarian. Plus, it’s much easier to apply over makeup and throughout the day. Dr. Turegano suggests using a face mist for a quick moisturizing fix on the go.
For those with dry skin, a good face mist can provide extra moisture throughout the day. However, oily skin types can benefit too, as it hydrates without weighing the skin down. People with combination skin can enjoy the flexibility of using a face mist when needed and a heavier, thicker moisturizer at night.
When Is the Best Time to Use Face Mist?
When it comes to applying face mist, Dr. Nazarian has two suggestions: “For hydrating or anti-inflammatory mists, I recommend using them earlier in your skincare routine, ideally after cleansing. Mists with free-radical fighting antioxidants can be used at almost any time, even toward the end of your skincare regimen.”
Dr. Turegano concurs that the timing of application affects the mist’s effectiveness. “Using face mist before applying skincare can be beneficial because damp skin absorbs products better.” The mist helps to hydrate the skin, allowing the following products to penetrate deeper, making your skincare routine more efficient.
That said, face mists can also be applied over makeup or on skin that hasn’t been freshly cleansed. “Some mists include refreshing cleansing ingredients that revive your skin without the need for rinsing,” says Dr. Nazarian. “These are great for mid-day touch-ups.”
In other words, whether you're enhancing your skincare or refreshing your complexion midday, face mists offer a variety of benefits. “The greatest advantage of a face mist is when your skin is exposed to high-stress environments, like on an airplane, at the beach, or during a long, hot, muggy day in the city,” explains Dr. Nazarian. “A quick spritz can instantly revive tired, stressed skin.” However, it’s important to note: If the mist doesn’t contain emollients or occlusives, it may not lock in moisture effectively, as water can evaporate and leave skin drier. Check the ingredients and choose one with hydrating components like ceramides to keep moisture sealed in.
