Managing finances can often feel like a full-time job, which is why it’s essential to pause and celebrate your wins—both big and small. Whether you’ve reached a significant milestone, opened a Roth IRA, or simply become more aware of your spending and saving habits, recognizing these victories is crucial before moving on to your next financial goal.
For me, relocating to New York after college and managing my finances on my own was a major achievement. Here's what some of the other LH team members had to say:
Editor-in-Chief Melissa Kirsch
Paying off my student loans.
Deputy Editor Alice Bradley
The financial decision I’m most proud of happened in my early 20s when I contributed 20% of my income to my 401K. At the time, it seemed like a stretch, but I knew that with my relatively low expenses and fairly decent salary as an editor, it was a unique opportunity. Though I only maintained that contribution level for a year, the growth in my retirement account was so significant that I’ve been congratulating myself for that choice ever since.
Managing Editor Virginia K. Smith
Learning how to live in New York without relying on 1) family support or 2) falling into significant debt. Eventually, I got to a point where I could live independently without completely wrecking my finances. (* Knocks on wood vigorously *)
Senior Tech Editor David Murphy
Finally taking the plunge and starting a Roth IRA, which I now max out every year without fail. #FeelsGreat
Staff Writer Nick Douglas
One of my proudest moments, probably around the age of 26, was when I finally got my spending under control and increased my income enough that I wasn’t living paycheck to paycheck. That was an incredible feeling.
Contributor Jaime Green
Cleared my credit card debt before starting grad school.
So, what’s the financial achievement you’re most proud of?
