The dot pitch rating of a monitor indicates how crisp and clear the image on the screen will be. It's measured in millimeters (mm), with smaller values corresponding to sharper images. The way dot pitch is measured depends on the display technology in use.

In most CRTs, dot pitch is measured by the distance between holes in the shadow mask, a metal screen full of holes through which the electron beams pass to focus on the phosphor surface.
Monitors with Trinitron technology, created by Sony, use an aperture grill instead of a shadow mask. This grill has small vertical wires, and the dot pitch is determined by the horizontal distance between these wires.
For LCDs and most other display types, dot pitch is the measurement between the subpixels of the same color in pixel triads.

Typical dot pitches for computer monitors are .31mm, .28mm, .27mm, .26mm, and .25mm. Traditional televisions tend to have a larger dot pitch of around .51mm, while large-screen TVs or projectors can have a dot pitch up to 1 millimeter.

The closer the dots are to each other, the sharper and more detailed the image will appear. If the dots are spaced farther apart, they become visible and can make the image look grainy. Typically, you should aim for a .28mm dot pitch or finer, as anything larger tends to produce a grainy display on most monitors.
