Gyms are filled with odd and intriguing equipment. For beginners, everything can seem puzzling: Is this bar 45 pounds? What’s the purpose of that small wheel with handles in the corner? As you gain experience or explore more specialized gyms, you’ll encounter even more unique items like chalk, bars with unusual grips, straps, wraps, and ropes.
We aim to answer your questions, so let’s begin by identifying the strange items you’ve noticed at your gym. It could be a piece of equipment provided by the gym or something members bring. Whether it’s a complete mystery or something you recognize but aren’t sure how to use, we’re here to help.
For instance: My gym has a bucket of random items located between the dumbbell area and the pull-up station. Inside, there’s a belt with a chain attached, designed to hang weights from your hips during pull-ups. After some trial and error, I figured out how to attach the weight correctly. If you search thoroughly, you’ll also find a standard weightlifting belt in the bucket. However, one item baffled me for the longest time: a curved metal piece with a strap that seemed illogical. Eventually, I saw someone using it and realized it’s meant to stabilize your elbows during bicep curls.
What’s confusing you at the gym? Or perhaps there’s a piece of equipment others are using, and you’re unsure if it’s right for you? Share your questions with us, and we’ll aim to address them in an upcoming article.
