The Blue Devils was one of many names put forward in a 1921 competition to select a fitting nickname for the university. Other suggestions included Blue Eagles, Royal Blazes, Blue Warriors, and Polar Bears. Although the contest didn’t produce a clear winner, the student newspaper began calling the university’s teams the Blue Devils, and the name stuck.
Additional Articles on Team Nicknames:
The name was drawn from the Chasseurs Alpins, a regiment of French soldiers known for wearing blue capes and berets. They were affectionately called "les Diables Bleus" (the Blue Devils) and were celebrated for their bravery during World War I, even organizing fundraising efforts for the U.S. war campaign.
