Animal Crossing: New Horizons was one of the games that provided comfort in 2020, but not everyone plays it daily. Perhaps you got hooked on a different game on your Switch or simply grew tired of the daily routines—and that’s perfectly fine! However, when you return, you might find your island looking quite different.
Unlike many other games, stepping away from Animal Crossing brings in-game consequences. While they’re not drastic, the number of unfinished tasks and missed events can pile up if you take extended breaks. Coming back to a neglected island can feel overwhelming, especially if it's your first time playing an Animal Crossing game, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with all the steps to bring your village back to life.
Reconnect with your in-game friends
For many socially-driven players, the first thing they’ll do is catch up with the villagers they haven’t interacted with in a while. Some will be thrilled to see you again, while others may be upset by your long absence. They might even threaten to leave if they’re not happy with the island’s state. But don’t worry, you can win their affection back by completing their requests, gifting them items, and cleaning up the island. Be sure to check in with everyone to see if they have any important updates or specific needs to be addressed.
Squash those cockroaches
If it’s been over a month since your last visit, you’ll likely find some unwanted cockroaches have taken over your home. While they aren’t harmful, they’re certainly a nuisance. You can simply step on them to get rid of them, but don’t forget to check under your furniture in case some are hiding there. Once all the cockroaches are gone, your Villager will cheerfully say, “All the pesky cockroaches are GONE! I feel so much better now!”
Island maintenance
Now that your home is pest-free, it’s time to focus on the island’s overall upkeep. Weeds, fossils, and seashells accumulate while you’re away. It’ll take some effort to clear everything up, but the seashells will be useful for crafting, and you can donate any fossils you find to Blathers the Owl.
Check your mailbox
Just like in real life, you receive daily mail in Animal Crossing. These deliveries happen even when you're not logged in, so take a few minutes to catch up on your letters and packages—just keep in mind you might not receive all of your mail.
Your villager’s mailbox can store up to 300 messages. If you've been away for a few months and your inbox was full, you might have missed out on some mail, including gifts from friends or unique, one-time items that only appear once a year. Unfortunately, these lost items can’t be retrieved—unless you use time travel.
Seek out special events
The Animal Crossing series operates on its own seasonal calendar with special holidays and festivals that only happen once annually. These events come with exclusive items and updates to your town, such as snowy weather on Toy Day. Once the events pass, they’re gone for good, but if you’re lucky, you may stumble across one when you log in again. Be sure to explore every corner of your town to see if anything has changed.
I wouldn’t advise playing a game every day just because of FOMO—there are so many other games, hobbies, and significant life events that should take priority over Animal Crossing. That said, there are numerous online tools available to help you stay informed about upcoming seasonal events in New Horizons, or even predict random occurrences on your island like meteor showers and weather or Stalk Market shifts, ensuring you never miss out.
