Some of us struggle with remembering faces, which can create an awkward situation when we think we’re meeting someone for the first time, only to find out we’ve already met. Even worse, we might mistakenly think we’ve met someone before and greet them in that manner, only for them to have no clue who we are. Here’s a quick trick to avoid these uncomfortable moments.
On NPR’s Hidden Brain podcast, they suggest a simple method to determine if the person you're talking to is a stranger or someone you should recognize. Say this in a relaxed or neutral tone to keep it casual. As you greet them with a handshake or a brief wave, say, “Hey, do I know you from somewhere...?”
If they respond with a 'no,' smoothly say, “Oh, you just seemed a bit familiar. It’s great to meet you!”
If they say 'yes' and explain how you know each other, reply with, “Yes, that’s right! So wonderful to see you again!” Of course, this trick is only effective a couple of times with the same person, so if you’re sure you’ve met before (and perhaps already used this method), switch to something more general like, “Hey, how have you been?”
For any warm greeting, the most important aspect is to convey that you're genuinely happy to meet the person (or to reconnect if you realize you know each other). Offer a sincere smile, use a friendly tone when speaking, and engage as an attentive listener.
