When it comes to answering the call of nature, determining what’s considered 'normal' can be tricky. It's rare for our friends or colleagues to announce when they’re heading to the restroom, and they certainly don’t share details of their return. This makes it almost impossible to know what others are up to behind closed bathroom doors. So, when exactly is the best time to go?
As per a gastroenterologist interviewed by Women’s Health, the healthiest time for a bowel movement is in the morning. While you sleep, your body continues its digestion process, which is why it’s natural to feel the need to go soon after waking. To keep things running smoothly, aim for a fiber-rich breakfast, a little coffee, a large glass of water, and visit the bathroom at a regular time each day. As Women’s Health points out, while diet is important, 'your bowels also love habits.'
Naturally, every person’s body operates differently, and what’s normal for one person might not be the same for another. You may find yourself going three times a day, while someone else may only go every other day. If you’re consistently heading to the bathroom at the same time each day—whether at noon or 8 p.m.—just stick to it (as long as you're going at least three times a week [PDF]). Maintaining your own personal schedule is key.
Keep in mind: While a good bathroom read might be enjoyable, spending too much time on the toilet can lead to hemorrhoids. If things aren't moving along, don’t waste time sitting there waiting for the 'perfect' moment. Cut your losses and get up. And maybe think about getting a squatty potty.
