Appear in public with a belly that suggests you're expecting, and suddenly everyone starts asking, 'When's the baby due?' and 'Do you know the gender?' as if your private life is somehow their concern. You might feel the urge to respond kindly, but there’s another option: lie.
You can either prepare your lies in advance or let the moment guide you. You can be bluntly rude, or give a response that's just uncomfortable enough. The choice is yours because, honestly, strangers can mind their own business. (Although you can lie to friends and family too, but that situation requires a bit more tact.)
For instance, here’s what Anne Hathaway says when asked about baby names:
They ask, ‘Do you know the name?’ and we reply, ‘Africa,’” Hathaway said with a wide grin, stretching the first syllable with a loud, “Ahh.”
Then you stare deeply into their eyes without blinking or looking away,” she went on. “And you just watch them get uncomfortable.
For an easier lie, sidestep the gender question with, 'Nope, we aren’t finding out,' even if you already know. You can also invent a due date, and it can be as close or distant as you like.
Or the ultimate move, which I never had the courage to use myself, but really wish I had: Just say, 'Huh? I’m not pregnant.'
