Although I haven't yet received my stimulus check, I've already decided that whatever amount I do get, I’ll donate. Why? Because I’ve been working steadily throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, so I don’t need to replace lost income. I also don’t need to use the check for an emergency fund (mine is already solid) or to pay off any debt (I’ve been debt-free since 2016). From my point of view, the best way to use this money is by helping others.
If you're also considering donating your stimulus check—or making any charitable donation to support those impacted by COVID-19—here are four trustworthy organizations to consider. Each of these has earned a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator, a site that rates and evaluates charities based on their effectiveness and accountability.
CDC Foundation
The CDC Foundation is a nonprofit organization created by Congress to mobilize private-sector and philanthropic resources in support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s essential health protection work. This work is particularly crucial right now, so consider donating to the CDC Foundation.
Center for Disaster Philanthropy
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy offers the chance to contribute to a COVID-19 disaster response fund, which will help support activities related to preparedness, containment, response, and recovery in the face of the pandemic. The organization was recognized by Charity Navigator in its list of nonprofits responding to COVID-19, making it a highly recommended option.
Feeding America
Feeding America is the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S., with a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs across the nation. With many more families and individuals depending on food banks at this time, a donation to Feeding America can provide critical support to those in need.
(I made a donation to Feeding America at the end of March, just in case you're wondering.)
GiveDirectly
If you'd prefer to directly send your stimulus funds to a family in need, GiveDirectly is a great option to consider:
We’re tackling this crisis by doing what we've been doing for the past decade: delivering cash. Every household will receive $1,000, and the main challenge will be how much we can raise to reach as many people as possible.
GiveDirectly is partnering with Propel to identify families and households in need. You can donate to the general COVID-19 cash fund or choose to direct your contribution to a household in the Bay Area, Las Vegas, New York City, or Seattle.
You can also take part in GiveDirectly's pledge to #PassTheCheck, which is exactly what it sounds like: a commitment to pass your stimulus check on to a family in greater need.
I’ve already signed the pledge—and as soon as my check arrives, I’ll pass it forward.
