Despite common belief, the COVID-19 pandemic remains ongoing. The BA.5 variant currently circulating is notably contagious and can bypass some of our safeguards against infection, including reinfections. However, vaccines still provide strong protection against severe illness.
If you're aiming to minimize the risk of contracting or unknowingly spreading the virus—and you’re up to date with your vaccinations—wearing a properly fitted N95 mask in public spaces is your best bet. Here’s how to access them for free.
How to Acquire Free N95 Face Masks
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the public was urged to avoid purchasing N95 masks in order to ensure there were enough for healthcare workers and first responders. However, that’s no longer the case, and now these masks are readily available for anyone to buy.
In fact, N95 masks are now available for free through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, although each person is limited to three masks. Considering the rising prices of many goods, this is a welcome offer.
These free masks can be obtained from several national retailers, such as CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, Rite Aid, Publix, Walmart, and Sam’s Club, as well as some smaller independent pharmacies. No purchase is required to receive the masks.
To easily locate free masks near you, use the tool provided on the CDC website. Simply enter your zip code, and you will receive a list of pharmacies and other stores offering these free N95 masks.
Keep in mind that being listed on the CDC site doesn't guarantee that a retailer has free masks in stock, but it does provide you with a place to start. You can also call ahead to check availability. If you're struggling to find free masks nearby, you can contact 1-800-232-0233 for assistance.
