We all know that exercise is essential, but sticking to a routine that you actually enjoy can be tough. Let’s share the fitness plans we’ve managed to stick with and see if we can motivate each other.
After hopping between different routines recently—ranging from push-ups and bodyweight exercises to a two-week pull-up challenge—I finally settled on the simple but challenging weightlifting program called Starting Strength. I aim to do it three times a week, usually during my lunch break, and on off days, I either go for a run or do some yard work. (Honestly, I’m doing a lot more yard work now that I think of it as 'sunshine and exercise' instead of the dreaded 'gotta chop down the weeds again.') And when the weather doesn’t cooperate, I turn to Sworkit.
In just a few sessions, I’ve added 20 pounds to both my squat and deadlift, and I’m curious to see how far this will take me. It’s also an easy routine to follow since I can do it at the small gym near me or at the YMCA across town with its fantastic weight room. (I make sure to visit there every weekend.)
So, what’s been your approach to exercise? Or, if you’re not feeling inspired at the moment, did you have a solid routine in the past? Share your experiences with us:
How long have you been at it? Is your routine the same every time, or have you adjusted it over the weeks, months, or years?
What got you started? If someone wanted to follow your path, what advice would you give them?
What motivates you to keep going? Are you part of a team sport where the camaraderie drives you? Do you have a marathon to look forward to? Are you aiming to lose weight? Or do you stick with it because the routine is fun and beneficial for you?
We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
