Protein shakes often turn out clumpy or uneven without proper mixing. While a shaker bottle does a better job than a spoon for blending whey into milk, a blender can achieve even better results—if you don’t mind the cleanup. However, the most efficient and convenient option is a handheld frother.
This method is ideal for combining powdered ingredients with liquids. (If you’re making a protein smoothie with ice and fruit, a blender is still necessary. But that’s a given.) From my experience, a frother works seamlessly with any powder and liquid combination. I’ve tested it extensively and achieved outstanding results with:
Collagen powder mixed into coffee or tea
Whey powder blended with water
Clear whey combined with water
Hot cocoa and milk
Various supplement powders mixed into any liquid
Admittedly, this idea wasn’t my own. Companies like MUD\WTR and Beam include handheld frothers in their starter kits. In fact, the only reason I own a frother is because MUD\WTR sent me one with samples, hoping for a review. (My verdict: I don’t like it.)
Step-by-step guide to using a frother for protein powder mixing
Start by purchasing a frother. These handy devices are priced similarly to shaker bottles, ranging from $7-10 for basic models to much higher prices for premium coffee accessories. For our needs, an affordable model powered by AA batteries or USB charging will suffice.
Prepare your liquid in an oversized container. When you activate the frother, the liquid will expand. Using eight ounces of liquid in a 16-ounce container will help prevent spills and messes.
Add the powder to the liquid, then insert and turn on the frother. (Note: For clear whey, insert the frother first to avoid clogging.) Position the frother in the center to create a whirlpool effect, but be cautious as the liquid may rise or spill. With practice, you’ll learn to minimize mess by angling the frother against the cup’s side or pulsing it intermittently instead of running it continuously.
In just five to 10 seconds, you can create a velvety, lump-free protein shake—or any other silky-smooth beverage you crave. Spend a few extra seconds cleaning the frother’s whisk; a quick rinse with soapy water under the tap usually does the trick. Then, savor your perfectly blended drink, with no cleanup required beyond your cup.
