A few years ago, the blog at Open Bible conducted an interesting experiment, analyzing a random sample of 300,000 church names to explore some of the naming trends within U.S. churches.
Their findings reveal that different Christian denominations have distinct preferences when it comes to naming churches. For example, Catholics often use the names of saints, while some Protestant groups prefer names that are more straightforward, often including the church's location and the sequence of its founding. In other words, a 'First Baptist Church of [Town]' was named that way because it was the inaugural Baptist church established in that area.
According to Open Bible, 'First' is present in 12% of Baptist church names, 10% of Methodist church names, and a notable 21% of Presbyterian church names. In fact, 'First Baptist' topped the list as the most frequently used name in their sample, with 5,115 churches adopting this title.
'Second' and 'Third' churches are not as uncommon as one might think. They tend to emerge when a church becomes too large for its congregation or when a group splits off. For instance, the 'Second Baptist Church of Detroit' was established when 13 former slaves broke away from the city's First Baptist Church due to its discriminatory practices. As membership numbers grow or splits increase, the number of these churches can escalate. In Philadelphia, you can find a 'Tenth Presbyterian,' and in Los Angeles, there's a 'Twenty Eighth Church Of Christ Scientist.'
