As trends from the '90s and Y2K eras surge in popularity, it was only a matter of time before low-rise jeans returned. In their heyday, they were known for daringly short zippers, but today's version sits just at or below the hips—not as extreme as the originals, but still a bold departure from the high-rise style that has dominated for so long.
"In the early 2000s, we had the ultra-low rise, which now seems pretty outrageous and revealing (but that was the point)," says stylist Christina Stein. "Fashion trends always cycle back, and Gen Z has become enamored with the things we used to donate to Goodwill—everything from low-rise jeans to scarves around the neck and corset tops—it's all part of a larger movement."

Ensure the Fit is Perfect
A common complaint about low-rise jeans is that they can be unflattering on many body types. To avoid this, make sure the fit is perfect. Choose a pair that isn't too tight or too loose, and focus on comfort.

"When choosing low-rise jeans, size and comfort are key," says fashion stylist Catherine Bibeau. "Unlike mid-rise or high-rise styles, low-rise jeans rest comfortably below your waist, hugging your hips. These jeans are made to emphasize your hip line and won’t sit as high as your natural waist."
She also notes that the resurgence of low-rise jeans brings with it a wave of body positivity, promoting a celebration of diverse body shapes. "This change reflects a more inclusive approach to fashion that wasn't as common during the original era of low-rise jeans," Bibeau explains.
Think About the Cut
Low-rise jeans refer specifically to where they sit on your waist. However, they come in various cuts, including bootcut, flare, and straight leg. Stein advises picking a style that best complements your shape. "The cut of the denim can accentuate your figure," she says. For instance, "someone with curves might prefer a bootcut." Cropped jeans can elongate your legs, while wide-leg straight cuts look flattering on those with wider hips or fuller thighs.

Embrace Retro Vibes
When grabbing a pair of low-rise jeans, fully embrace the retro feel they bring. Bibeau shares that she loves styling them with a "retro-inspired vibe that pays homage to their Y2K origins." To achieve that nostalgic look, she suggests pairing them with a fitted crop top, baby tee, or camisole.
Follow the Rule of Thirds
Stein explains that to confidently rock low-rise jeans, following the rule of thirds is essential. "You don't want the denim to visually cut your body in half," she says. Instead, aim to break your outfit into three sections for added visual interest, making the look more flattering. For jeans, this often means pairing them with a shorter top rather than a long one.

Throw on a Blazer
If you're feeling too exposed with your midriff on display—something that naturally happens with low-rise jeans—or simply want to add some layers, Bibeau suggests topping your outfit with a chic blazer. This move also helps update the trend, making it feel fresh rather than overly retro or costume-like.
Keep it Relaxed
Denim is generally best for laid-back looks, so think casual when styling your jeans. To achieve that effortless vibe, Stein recommends pairing low-rise jeans with an oversized t-shirt or sweater for a simple, everyday outfit. Bibeau agrees, adding that stylish and comfortable sneakers are the perfect finishing touch.
Get Creative with Accessories
No look is truly complete without the right accessories. When styling low-rise denim, Bibeau loves to add a chunky belt or bold jewelry to capture that distinctive 'turn of the century' vibe. A statement jacket also works wonders to layer the outfit and introduce new textures and colors to the overall look.
