For those who have been with Mytour since we started nine years ago, you might recall a recurring segment we once ran titled “Your View.” In this feature, we would pose a question, provide our own answer, and then invite you to share your thoughts.
This week, I’ve decided to revive this feature to help us connect more deeply and, more importantly, to exchange insights and knowledge with everyone here.
So, the question for this week’s Your View is: “What Is The Worst Movie That Everyone Loves?”
My pick is the 2004 film “Crash,” directed by Paul Haggis and featuring Sandra Bullock, Ryan Phillippe, and Matt Dillon. Despite its polarizing reception, it holds a 7.8 rating on IMDB and even clinched the Best Picture award at the 78th Academy Awards.
I’ve revisited this film multiple times, hoping my initial impression might change. While I understand its intent to highlight the damaging effects of racism, every scene depicting racism feels exaggerated and unrealistic. It’s as if someone unfamiliar with real-life racism imagined, “This must be what racism looks like!” and wrote it into the script.
While some performances were strong—especially from Ryan Phillippe, who can be brilliant—the storyline and script were so overtly focused on delivering a message that the core message itself became muddled and ineffective.
This film’s portrayal of racism is akin to comparing Disney’s magic castle to the real-life Hohenzollern Castle.
