According to the 1954 Geneva Agreement, the Ben Hai River became the temporary line dividing North and South Vietnam. Two characters, Hoai and Van, had been in love since the French-Vietnamese War. The film uses their love story to reflect the situation of the divided country at that time.

The film The Winds Rise revolves around two siblings from the same family who support opposing political systems. Mistaken for being insane, she is able to freely engage in political activities within the prison. After her release, Vân uses logic, actions, and emotion to convince her brother and several soldiers of the South Vietnamese army to switch sides and join the Liberation Front. After witnessing the suffering and losses caused by the war, Phương returns to fight alongside his sister for independence and peace.

Kịch bản Vĩ tuyến 17 ngày và đêm được Hải Ninh và Hoàng Tích Chỉ viết trong 5 năm. Đây cũng là kịch bản hai tập đầu tiên của điện ảnh cách mạng Việt Nam.

Tác phẩm có sức sống lâu bền bởi phản ánh chân thực cuộc đấu tranh anh hùng của dân tộc ta, mà tiêu biểu trong phim là hình ảnh chị Dịu kiên cường bất khuất, đã hy sinh mọi hạnh phúc cá nhân để góp hết sức mình cho cuộc giải phóng dân tộc. Vĩ tuyến 17 ngày và đêm đã giành được giải của Hội đồng hòa bình Thế giới và Giải nữ diễn viên xuất sắc cho Trà Giang tại Liên hoan phim Quốc tế Moskva năm 1973.
