1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Sinusitis, or sinus infection, occurs when the sinus cavities become infected, swollen, and inflamed, causing pain and discomfort that interferes with daily activities. The symptoms often worsen when the weather changes, especially during colder months. While medical treatments are commonly used, there are also home remedies using easy-to-find, gentle ingredients to manage sinus infections. One such remedy is apple cider vinegar, a common ingredient in beauty routines, cooking, and health improvement. However, many people are unaware of its amazing benefits for treating sinusitis.
How to use:
- Method 1: Mix 240ml of warm water, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of honey, and drink it daily.
- Method 2: Drink apple cider vinegar directly, 1 tablespoon per dose, 3 times a day.
- Method 3: Mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar with 1/2 cup of water, heat it gently, and inhale the steam. Be sure to buy organic apple cider vinegar to achieve the best results.

2. Turmeric
Turmeric has long been known as a versatile natural remedy with a wide range of health benefits, especially for digestive issues and skincare. It is considered a precious herb due to its high content of anti-inflammatory compounds found in turmeric starch. The active ingredient, curcumin, has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can prevent and help treat conditions like stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and even cancer. Turmeric also aids in weight loss, improves blood circulation, helps fight intestinal parasites, and is excellent for digestive health. It helps reduce inflammation, prevent infections, supports wound healing, and promotes scar healing. Given these remarkable properties, turmeric is highly effective in treating sinusitis and rhinitis.
How to use:
- Method 1: Clean several fresh turmeric roots, crush them to extract the juice, and use it as nasal drops daily.
- Method 2: Mix turmeric powder with pure honey in a 1:1 ratio to create a smooth paste, then use it as a mouth rinse. Rinse 4–5 times a day, using about 1/2 teaspoon each time, and keep it in your mouth for 15 minutes.
If you consistently follow either of these methods, you will notice significant relief from the discomfort caused by sinusitis. Turmeric's strong anti-inflammatory properties, along with its natural origin, ensure effective results with no side effects when used regularly.

3. Ginger and Dried Onion
Ginger is not only a common spice that enhances the flavor of dishes, but it also serves as a powerful remedy for treating sinusitis. Ginger application for sinusitis is a simple yet effective method to alleviate the troublesome symptoms caused by the condition. Fresh ginger has a spicy and warming nature, making it effective in soothing the body and eliminating bacteria. 4. Betel Leaves
Betel leaves are commonly used in cooking, especially in certain dishes where they are an essential ingredient. In the field of traditional medicine, they are known for their therapeutic properties, particularly for treating joint pain and swelling during cold weather. With their spicy flavor and warming properties, betel leaves act as an effective antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. This makes them highly beneficial in treating sinusitis and clearing up thick nasal mucus.
How to use:
- First, wash the betel leaves thoroughly. Don’t forget to soak them in a saltwater solution for at least 20 minutes to ensure they are free from bacteria.
- Gently crush the leaves to release their essential oils.
- Next, roll the leaves into small cylinders and insert them into the nostrils, starting with the side that is more congested. Leave them in for about 15-20 minutes before removing them. Then, repeat the process for the other nostril.
- For best results, perform this treatment twice a day, in the morning and before bed, and you should begin to see significant improvement soon.

5. Giao Plant
Sinusitis is a condition that tends to recur frequently. While patients may have undergone conventional medical treatments or even surgery, these methods are often costly and may not provide lasting relief. As a result, many people turn to traditional herbal remedies to treat this condition. One of the most effective herbal treatments is using the Giao plant, also known by names like fishbone plant, dry bone plant, snake venom plant, and crab claw plant. The Giao plant typically grows between 1 to 1.5 meters in height and belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. It is known for its abundant white latex and a unique structure resembling multiple bones connected together. Various parts of the Giao plant, including the leaves, branches, and roots, can be used in medicinal treatments, whether fresh or dried. The latex of the plant is especially effective for treating warts.
How to use:
- Take a small pot and a tube approximately 50 cm in length (not too short to avoid burns and not too long as the steam may be weak). Fill the pot with about a bowl of water. Cut 10-20 segments of the Giao plant and place them in the pot. Heat on the stove to create steam.
- Inhale the steam for about 15-20 minutes, or up to 30-50 minutes for a more intense session. For best results, make this part of your daily routine.
Note: Avoid letting the plant’s sap get into your eyes. This method should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

6. Golden Sword Plant
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Golden Sword Plant is known for its ability to clear heat, detoxify, reduce inflammation, break down phlegm, control bleeding, and promote blood circulation. Modern medical research has shown that this plant contains various components that aid in reducing phlegm and inflammation, such as flavonoids and steroids. Notably, the flavonoids Quercetin and Kaempferol help strengthen blood vessels, reduce mucosal sensitivity, and are particularly effective in treating acute sinusitis and allergic rhinitis.
How to use:
- Method 1: Take one Golden Sword leaf, wash it thoroughly, chew it, and swallow. Chew three times a day for 1 to 2 months to see results.
- Method 2: Cut the Golden Sword plant into small pieces and steam it with vegetable oil for 8 hours. Strain through gauze and store in a glass container. To use, dip a cotton swab into the solution and apply it to the mucous membranes of the nose.
Note: Because the Golden Sword Plant contains active compounds that may harm the body, it should only be used with approval from a doctor or qualified practitioner.

7. Perilla Leaves
In Traditional Medicine, Perilla leaves are known for their spicy taste and warm properties, making them effective in fighting inflammation and bacteria. They are commonly used to treat digestive issues, allergies, rheumatism, headaches, body aches, itching, colds, and even sinusitis. Additionally, the flower buds of Perilla are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for their ability to treat sneezing, runny nose, and allergic conditions. They have detoxifying, anti-allergy, and anti-itch properties, making them beneficial in treating allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Modern medicine has also identified that Perilla leaves are rich in essential minerals and vitamins, particularly vitamin C and K. Consuming just 100g of Perilla leaves daily provides 518% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin K and 86% of vitamin C, which helps boost immunity and protect the nasal mucous membranes against pathogens.
How to use:
- Take a small amount of dried Perilla leaves and boil them in a teapot. Let the temperature drop for about 15 minutes to release the essential oils.
- Strain the solution, and you can add honey or lemon juice for a better taste. Drink this three times a day for best results.

8. Saline Solution
Rinsing the nose with saline solution is an effective method for relieving nasal congestion and sinus irritation, and it is simple enough for anyone to do at home. The saline rinse helps to flush out allergens, mucus, and other debris from the nasal passages. This method also moistens the mucous membranes, reduces swelling, and decreases inflammation, all of which contribute to effective sinusitis treatment. Most ENT doctors recommend saline rinses after sinus surgery to clear out excess fluids, prevent mucus adhesion, and promote healing of the mucous membranes. Scientific studies have proven the benefits of saline rinsing in both treating and preventing sinusitis and allergic rhinitis.
How to perform:
- Method 1: Mix one teaspoon of salt with two cups of warm water and a pinch of baking soda. Pour the solution into a small bowl, press one nostril closed with your finger, and inhale through the other nostril, allowing the saline to flow in. Gently blow your nose afterward. Repeat the process for the other nostril, doing this for about 5 times a session, and continue for 2 weeks.
- Method 2: Use sea salt or regular saline solution, warm it up, and follow the same steps as Method 1. However, avoid overusing saline when your nose is in a normal state. Limit this to once a week to keep your nose clean from dust and to help prevent sinus issues.

9. Garlic
Garlic is a common spice used in many dishes, but it also has powerful medicinal properties for treating various ailments, including the common cold, stomach issues, and indigestion. In addition, garlic is highly effective in treating sinusitis. Studies show that garlic contains numerous active compounds beneficial for health, such as alliin, which transforms into allicin when crushed or chopped. Allicin has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties, helping to cleanse infection sites. Scordinin, another component in garlic, boosts immunity and inhibits the growth of abnormal cells related to sinus inflammation. Furthermore, garlic is rich in vitamins and minerals essential for overall health. Due to its strong anti-inflammatory properties, garlic is a natural remedy for sinusitis. This traditional method is safe and effective.
How to Use:
- Method 1: Fresh Garlic: Take several fresh garlic cloves, peel them, and crush them to extract the juice. Mix the garlic juice with an equal amount of water to create a nasal solution. Although the solution may be quite strong and uncomfortable, keep in mind that "bitter medicine cures the disease"—persist for the best results.
- Method 2: Garlic Wine: Cut garlic into small pieces and soak it in alcohol (use 40g of garlic per 100ml of 40-45% white alcohol). Let it steep for 10 days until the solution turns yellow. You can use the garlic wine to irrigate your nose—although it may sting, it’s highly effective. You can also consume it, taking about one teaspoon twice daily: once in the morning before eating, and once before bed.
- Method 3: Garlic and Honey: Crush the garlic to extract the juice, then mix it with honey in a 1:2 ratio. Before applying, thoroughly clean your nasal passages with saline water, dry them, then dip cotton balls into the mixture and insert them into your nostrils for about an hour. For optimal results, repeat this process 3-4 times a day for a week.

10. Five-Color Purple Flower
The Five-Color Flower is a small herbaceous plant with soft, hairy stems that grow to about 25-50 cm in height. Its flowers emit a distinct, unpleasant odor and are commonly found in rural areas. The leaves are oval or triangular, measuring 2-6 cm in length and 1-3 cm in width, with serrated edges and fine hairs on both sides. The flowers are typically purple or green. The plant contains about 0.16% essential oil, which is a light yellow to golden color with a pleasant fragrance. It contains compounds such as cadinene, caryophyllene, and geratocromen, known for their anti-inflammatory, anti-edema, and anti-allergic properties, effective in both acute and chronic stages of sinusitis. In addition to reducing inflammation, the flower stimulates the nasal mucosa to increase secretion. When used, patients may experience a burning sensation in the nasal passages, and an increase in nasal discharge, helping to clear out mucus and pus from the sinuses.
How to Use:
- Method 1: Select fresh plants, wash thoroughly, soak in saltwater, crush them, and squeeze out the juice. Pour the juice into a spray bottle. This can be used as a nasal drop or applied to cotton balls to be placed in the nostrils for about 15-20 minutes. Use consistently for 7-10 days for full relief.
- Method 2: Use fresh plants, wash, and boil them to infuse the water. Sit and inhale the steam until the water cools. Afterward, reheat the water and repeat the steam inhalation. Continue for 10-20 days to notice significant improvement.
