In September 2023, a truck mishap resulted in 5 million bees being released onto a road near Toronto. While this seems like a massive number, it’s just a small portion of the billions of tons of freight moved by trucks annually across North America. Given the sheer volume of trucks on the road, such incidents occur occasionally, turning everything from beer to hagfish into unexpected roadside spectacles.
1. Beer Spill
In August 2015, a 23-year-old truck driver was distracted by his furry co-pilot, causing him to lose control of his vehicle on I-75 in Florida. The truck, carrying Bud Light, overturned and spilled Natural Light beer cans (a brand under Anheuser-Busch) across the road and nearby grass. Fortunately, both the driver and his dog emerged unharmed.
2. Pears
Merely two days following the Natural Light incident, a truck transporting produce spilled 22 tons of pears onto a highway in Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan province. Local villagers quickly seized the opportunity, arriving with bags to gather the scattered fruit. Some even filled entire vehicles, making several trips to take advantage of the mishap. Despite the pears being valued at approximately 80,000 yuan (around $11,000 in 2015), the owner didn't object to the scavenging, as the produce was too damaged to be sold.
3. Frozen Turkeys

Although the turkeys remained boxed and unharmed, they were no longer suitable for retail sale. However, the food didn’t go to waste; it was generously donated to the Alameda County Food Bank in Oakland.
4. Ice Cream
In 2011, a truck transporting 40,000 pounds of Edy’s Ice Cream overturned on Interstate 69 in Indiana. While the truck itself remained intact, ice cream containers spilled out as tow trucks attempted to move it to the shoulder. Fortunately, freezing temperatures helped preserve much of the frozen treat, which was then transferred to another truck. The driver sustained only minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital.
5. Live Crabs
In 2014, a van filled with live crabs collided with an SUV in Changsha, China, scattering the crustaceans across the street. Adding to the chaos, a single crocodile was also part of the cargo, which was safely captured. Witnesses quickly gathered the crabs, stuffing them into bags, bins, and even purses. According to The Daily Meal, the street was completely cleared of crabs within just five minutes of the accident.
6. Frozen Baked Goods and Bratwurst

(The incident, fittingly, occurred in the Midwest.) Cleaning up the mouthwatering mess took over seven hours, but thankfully, no one sustained serious injuries.
7. Paint
In 2012, a truck transporting 3000 gallons of paint overturned near Manaus, Brazil. The spilled paint blended together, forming a stunning pastel swirl of colors across the street.
8. LEGO Bricks
While a truck wasn’t directly responsible for this spill, it did cause quite a commotion on the highway. A family traveling on I-79 in West Virginia accidentally lost a crate of LEGO bricks—which was secured to their vehicle’s roof—scattering them across the interstate. The 11-year-old owner was devastated, but numerous generous Facebook users stepped in, offering to donate LEGO pieces and funds to help rebuild his collection.
9. Dead Fish
10. Wine
In 2015, a truck on Highway 132 in California collided with a van and overturned, spilling approximately 48,000 pounds of bottled wine. Both the truck driver and the van occupants were hospitalized with minor injuries.
11. Angry Bees

While beekeepers salvaged some hives, most of the escaped bees had to be neutralized with foam after attacking bystanders.
12. Cocaine
In 2007, a truck navigating a curve too sharply overturned on a Colombian highway, causing cocaine concealed within its walls and roof to spill onto the road. The driver escaped injury but was promptly arrested.
13. Sardines
In 2012, a truck driver in Kolobrzeg, Poland, caused a major traffic delay after failing to secure the rear of his vehicle, resulting in 24 tons of sardines spilling onto the road. The driver was fined $75 and charged $7500 for cleanup costs.
14. Bull Semen

Emergency responders discovered four small canisters, resembling propane tanks, emitting vapor and an unpleasant odor. After confirming the vapor was harmless dry ice, the workers swiftly removed the canisters from the highway.
15. Bacon
In June 2015, a truck carrying 70,000 pounds of bacon broke down on train tracks in Wilmington, Illinois, near Chicago. An Amtrak train struck the vehicle, flipping it and spilling its savory load. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
16. A 56-Foot Sperm Whale
The streets of Tainan, Taiwan, resembled a horror movie scene after a 56-foot sperm whale exploded while being transported through the city. The whale had previously beached itself and was en route to a research facility for examination. As the carcass decayed under the sun, internal gases accumulated until they erupted, covering the area in whale entrails.
17. Money
In 2004, an armored truck accident spilled over $2 million in coins on the New Jersey Turnpike, with a similar incident in 2018 releasing $300,000 on the same highway. In 2005, a truck fire caused $800,000 in scorching-hot quarters to scatter across an Alabama road. Additionally, in 2008, a vehicle transporting million nickels (valued at $185,000) to the Miami Federal Reserve overturned in a fatal crash, spilling its cargo.
18. A Ship Engine
When a 200-ton marine engine bound for a San Diego shipyard fell off its flatbed, the solution required three cranes and a new road. The colossal engine crushed three parked cars, with only one occupant sustaining minor injuries, and even pushed one vehicle beneath the pavement.
19. Explosives
In 2005, a truck transporting 35,000 pounds of explosives overturned on a Utah highway and exploded shortly after the driver and passenger escaped. The explosion created a 30-foot-deep and 70-foot-wide crater, hurled concrete barriers hundreds of feet, and twisted nearby railroad tracks. Miraculously, no fatalities occurred.
20. Slime Eels
In 2017, drivers near Portland, Oregon, were shocked when a truck abruptly stopped at a construction site, spilling 13 containers of slime eels, also known as hagfish. Approximately 7500 pounds of the slippery, mucus-producing fish covered the road, cars, and drivers, who had to navigate through ankle-deep slime. One witness told KOIN, 'Our brains couldn’t process what was happening.'
