After a long day of grocery shopping, putting on your apron, and preparing your ingredients, the last thing you want is a jar lid refusing to open. No matter how skilled you are, you’ve probably come across a stubborn lid that just won’t give. Fortunately, there are a number of techniques to try before resorting to ordering food. From simple tricks to homemade tools, here are some useful ways to unscrew a tough jar lid.
1. Run hot water over the jar lid.
This classic tip really works: Hold the lid of the jar under hot water for about a minute, then dry it off, and you should find it easier to twist open. The heat causes the metal to expand, making it easier to remove. As reported by Spoon University, you can also use a hair dryer for the same effect. (Just make sure the jar doesn’t get too hot to handle.)
2. Tap the jar lid on the counter.
Without breaking the jar, try giving the lid a few firm taps against the edge of your countertop. The shock from the impact where the lid meets the jar can sometimes break the seal and loosen it.
3. Use a towel for better grip.
If you’re struggling to twist open a lid, it could be your hands, not the jar. To combat slippery or greasy hands, grab a paper towel or dish towel and wrap it around the lid. This should provide the extra grip needed to break the seal.
4. Gently tap the jar’s bottom.
For this trick, put the lid out of your mind for a moment. Flip the jar upside down and give the bottom of the glass a few firm taps with your palm. The idea is to shift the contents inside, altering the pressure and possibly making the lid easier to remove.
5. Use a tool to help loosen the lid.
This method requires caution, so never use anything sharper than a butter knife. Slide the edge of a spoon or butter knife beneath the lid and gently wiggle it around. While it may not pop the lid off immediately, this trick helps to balance the pressure around the seal.
6. Create a duct tape handle.
Instead of buying special tools, you can easily create one at home. Tear off a strip of duct tape and wrap it around the edge of the lid, leaving a few inches of tape hanging loose. Fold the end of the tape and give it a firm pull. With any luck, the jar will open with little effort.
