Cellato, a Japanese ice cream brand, is redefining culinary opulence with a dessert priced at $6696 (873,400 yen) per serving. This lavish treat has recently earned the Guinness World Record for being the priciest ice cream on the planet.
At such a cost, it’s no surprise that the dessert includes actual gold. However, the gold-leaf garnish isn’t the primary factor behind its exorbitant price. According to the New York Post, the ice cream features an exceptionally rare white truffle from Alba, Italy, with a market value exceeding $15,000 per kilogram. Additional components include sake lees, a byproduct of sake brewing, and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. The recipe, crafted by RiVi’s head chef Tadayoshi Yamada, merges European and Japanese flavors. Known as byakuya, meaning 'white night' in Japanese, this creation is a true fusion of cultures, as reported by CNN.
That spoonful is worth approximately $1000, as recognized by Guinness World Records.According to a Cellato representative speaking to Guinness World Records, perfecting the dish took over 18 months, involving numerous trials and errors to achieve the ideal flavor. This suggests the taste surpasses even its luxurious appearance. While unconventional flavors like hard cheese and truffle may not rank among the top 10 strangest ice cream varieties, caviar—reportedly the next ingredient Cellato’s creators plan to experiment with—could easily make the list.
Although byakuya holds the Guinness World Record for the priciest ice cream, it remains significantly less expensive than the world’s most costly dessert. That title belongs to Serendipity 3’s Frrrozen Haute Chocolate sundae, a $25,000 masterpiece crafted from premium cocoa varieties. The extravagant price also includes a gold spoon adorned with diamonds, among other luxurious touches.
