Trader Joe’s customers, take caution: The store has recently recalled two varieties of its cookies due to the potential presence of rocks.
According to NBC News, the recalled products include Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Chunk and Almond Cookies with sell-by dates from October 17 to October 21, 2023, and Trader Joe’s Almond Windmill Cookies with sell-by dates from October 19 to October 21, 2023.
The company issued a statement urging customers who bought or received Almond Windmill Cookies and/or Dark Chocolate Chunk and Almond Cookies to avoid consuming them and either dispose of the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a complete refund.
The company also mentioned that all cookies from the affected batches have been removed from stores and destroyed, meaning any cookies on Trader Joe’s shelves now should be safe to eat. However, it’s still a good idea to check the sell-by dates on the packaging before purchasing.
That’s essentially all the information we have about the recall. The FDA typically shares details about recall-related investigations, but this particular recall hasn’t been listed on its website yet. As a result, we don’t know which cookie ingredient might have caused the rocks or whether Trader Joe’s employees—or any customers—actually found rocks in the cookies.
This isn’t the first time rocks have been found in food. For instance, in November 2021, Conagra Brands recalled Birds Eye Broccoli Tots due to 'the potential presence of small rocks and metal fragments,' according to the FDA. And in 2017, a Las Vegas man broke a couple teeth on rocks in a Whole Foods rotisserie chicken—though this seems less surprising once you realize that chickens intentionally consume small rocks and grit to aid digestion in their gizzards.
