Tamagotchi became a phenomenon in the 1990s, with the handheld video game selling 4 million units within just four months of its 1996 launch in Japan. By mid-1997, 10 million units had been shipped globally. It was among the first major games to simulate digital pets with life-or-death stakes, inspiring similar toys like GigaPets and Nano Pets. Now, a surprising new version of Tamagotchi comes from KFC.
The Verge reports that KFC’s digital pet game, Eduardochi, was initially available on its website and app for a limited period. The drumstick-shaped device will soon be sold in Spanish locations, starting December 3, 2024. Priced at €3.99 (around $4.20 USD), the promotion is set to run through the end of December, as reported by TechEBlog. Though there’s no word on global availability, it might be possible to find the item on eBay or Amazon through third-party sellers.
Instead of nurturing an alien pet, players will care for a fried chicken drumstick. While gameplay details remain sparse, if it mirrors the original Tamagotchi experience, users can expect to manage meters for hunger, happiness, and training to keep the drumstick happy and healthy.
The reason behind KFC's choice of the name Eduardochi for the chicken-themed device still remains unclear. According to Trend Hunter, the name originates from a meme circulating in December 2021, which encouraged people to assign Spanish names to inanimate objects. A fried chicken drumstick was humorously named Eduardo, and KFC has adopted this playful nickname.
This isn't KFC's first venture into the gaming world. In 2020, the company revealed the KFConsole, a gaming device that allows you to play games while warming up your food—though there's been little follow-up news about it since.
