By the close of this year, Taco Bell plans to revive one of two retired favorites.
One contender is the Double Decker Taco: a crunchy taco shell stuffed with seasoned beef and cheese, wrapped in a soft flour tortilla with a layer of beans holding it all together. Introduced in 1995, it became a permanent menu item in 2006 before being removed in 2019 during a menu simplification that also saw the exit of the Fiery Doritos Locos Tacos and other fan favorites.
The other option is the Enchirito, a fusion of enchilada and burrito: a soft flour tortilla filled with beef, beans, and onions, topped with melted cheese and red sauce. This dish debuted in 1970—just eight years after Taco Bell’s inception—and was discontinued in 2013.
Per a Taco Bell press release, the Enchirito and Double Decker Taco rank among the most sought-after retired items. Soon, the public will decide which one makes a comeback. As UPROXX notes, the fast-food chain will reintroduce the dish with the most votes in the Taco Bell app by October 6. To vote, users must download the app and create a free Taco Bell Rewards account. Voting is limited to once daily, and the winning item will be revealed on October 7.
Taco Bell’s openness to customer feedback stems from the triumphant fan-driven campaign to bring back the Mexican Pizza, which has now secured a permanent place on the menu.
“Following the overwhelming support for the Mexican Pizza, we’re empowering our most dedicated fans with a unique digital experience to deepen their connection to the brand,” stated Sean Tresvant, Taco Bell’s chief brand officer, in the press release.
