Working in the service industry can be challenging, especially when employees depend on tips to cover their living expenses. While some patrons are generous, others criticize the tipping culture. However, individuals like Richard Brooks stand out, having recently tipped his IHOP server an astounding $1300.
As reported by United Press International, Brooks and his group of 10 left this substantial tip for waiter Tulio Maldonado in Saugus, Massachusetts, as part of their initiative called the $1000 Breakfast Club. The group regularly combines their funds during their outings every few months to astonish a service worker with a tip that goes far beyond the usual amount.
“We do this partly for our own satisfaction,” Brooks told WCVB. “But the real reward is being able to help someone like him pay his bills. It gives you an incredible sense of fulfillment.”
Brooks mentioned that the concept originated from his brother, who learned about a group in California engaging in a similar tradition. While their primary goal is to astonish servers with unexpected bonuses, Brooks and his friends also aim to motivate others to follow suit. They document their generous acts on Instagram, showcasing moments like leaving a $1600 tip, which the server planned to use for his mother’s hearing aids, and another $1400 tip given to an IHOP waitress.
Generous tippers do exist. In 2013, a waiter at a Houston Italian restaurant received a $5000 tip from two customers aware of his recent car loss due to flooding. Similarly, in 1994, officer Robert Cunningham proposed sharing a lottery ticket with his waitress, which later won $6 million, and he honored his promise by splitting the prize with her.
