Perhaps your can opener is missing, damaged, or packed away in a moving box. Maybe the hotel room or vacation home you’re staying in doesn’t provide one. Whatever the situation, you might find yourself craving a can of baked beans, only to realize you have no tool to puncture its thin metal lid.
However, as Country Living points out, the lid is considerably weaker than many of the other metal tools in your kitchen. While you might be tempted to grab the largest, sharpest object—like a butcher's knife—to open the can, you can actually accomplish the task without resorting to stabbing it like a villain in a cheesy horror movie.
The ideal tool for this is a spoon. Hold the spoon by its handle so that only the tip extends beneath your pinky finger. Position this tip on the rim of the can, where a can opener would typically go, and gently move it back and forth at that same spot. It won’t be long before a small hole forms. Once that’s done, press the spoon’s tip into the hole and begin sawing around the rim of the can (or at least around enough of the perimeter to easily lift the lid). Be cautious, as the edges of the can will be jagged, but it’s a safer method than using a knife.
You can see YouTuber DaveHax showcase the method in the video below.
