Where should pizza lovers head to for the most delectable slice on the planet? The undisputed top spot goes to 10 by Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria, located in Naples, Italy, according to Big 7 Travel’s list of the world’s best pizzerias. But you don’t have to book a flight to the birthplace of pizza for a phenomenal slice. Out of the 50 pizzerias on the list, only three are in Italy.
The other pizzerias are spread across the globe. As Food & Wine reports, one could be closer to you than you think. The second-best pizza joint after Vitagliano is Ken’s Artisan Pizza in Portland, Oregon, which serves up irresistible wood-fired pies. The U.S. is well-represented with 11 pizzerias on the list, including seven in the top 25, like Pizzeria Bedia in Philadelphia, Bricco Coal Fired Pizza in New Jersey, and two San Francisco spots: Tony’s Pizza Napoletana and Del Popolo.
There’s an abundance of highly rated pizzerias outside the U.S., too, such as Peppe Pizzeria in Paris, which ranks third, and Dante’s Pizzeria Napoletana in New Zealand at 24th. Many of these serve traditional Neapolitan pizza. However, not every pizzeria on the list sticks to tradition. Detroit’s Buddy’s Pizza, ranked 25th, is credited with inventing Detroit-style pizza, while Oslo’s Vinoteket serves pizza that could easily be mistaken for hors d’oeuvres with its small, flavorful wedges.
