When most people extract the large seed from an avocado, it often ends up in the trash. With Americans consuming 8 pounds of avocados per person in 2018 alone, this amounts to significant food waste. Now, a new startup has found a way to repurpose this waste into disposable utensils that are more environmentally friendly than plastic, effectively solving two problems with one pit.
In 2014, chemical engineer Scott Munguía founded Biofase in Mexico after realizing that avocado seeds contain a biopolymer—an organic, degradable substance that can replace plastic. Biofase has since patented a process to convert leftover avocado pits into heat-resistant bioplastic resin sheets, which are then molded into forks, knives, spoons, and straws. Each month, the company recycles around 130 tons of avocado seeds.
Biofase, AmazonBiofase's products do more than tackle food waste. Comprising 60% avocado biopolymer and 40% synthetic organic compounds, they decompose in just 240 days in landfills. In contrast, plastic disposable straws can take up to 200 years to break down. For an even more eco-conscious disposal option, you can add these avocado pit utensils to your compost bin.
While most of Biofase's products are distributed to restaurants, you can also purchase them in bulk from Amazon. Here are more products that can help you lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
