International flights can be a real challenge, especially since I travel abroad frequently. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 airlines for economy passengers. This ranking is specifically for international routes and does not cover domestic US flights. Airlines are rated based on seat comfort, the quality of extras like personal TVs, and service quality, including staff and food. The biggest factor in the rankings is comfort, with service as a secondary consideration. This data comes from SeatGuru, focusing on only the top-rated jets from each airline.
10. American Airlines

When I first began creating this list, I didn’t expect American Airlines to rank very highly. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they offer great extras, such as standard DC power outlets at many seats. If they provided power outlets at every seat, they would have scored even higher. They also offer personal TVs on every aircraft. While their service could be improved, it was still decent, and the roomy seats more than make up for the slight service drop-off.

Both British Airways and Qantas received low scores due to having the smallest seats on the list. From my personal experience with both airlines, while the service is generally good and the food excellent on Qantas, the seating is extremely uncomfortable. I was also disappointed to find that British Airways does not offer power outlets at any of its seats.
8. Malaysia
Malaysia Airlines offers excellent service, and their seats are among the largest on this list. While they don't provide power outlets at the seats, they do have personal TVs for every economy passenger. The friendly staff also contribute to their high ranking here.
7. Qantas Airways
Despite the less-than-ideal seating, Qantas has a strong reputation for excellent service and friendly staff. The food is good, and every passenger has their own personal TV. However, like Malaysia, there are no power outlets available at the seats on this airline.
6. Virgin Atlantic
My experience with Virgin Atlantic was overall fantastic. The British staff were much more friendly and pleasant compared to British Airways, and you could tell they paid close attention to detail in their interior design and in-flight extras. Unfortunately, during my last flight with Virgin, there were significant issues with the in-flight entertainment system, and nothing could be done to fix it during the flight. While the seats could have been more spacious, the overall service was excellent, and the free alcohol throughout the flight was a nice touch.

This airline is an unexpected gem. Nearly every review I came across was overwhelmingly positive, with the few exceptions generally being due to delays, which are often beyond the airline's control. The seat sizes are some of the best on the list, and the food, typical of French cuisine, is top-notch. For long-haul flights, passengers can enjoy a buffet that’s available at any time during the journey.
4. Cathay
Cathay Pacific offers spacious seating, exceptional service, personal TVs for all passengers, and power outlets at every seat. The airline has introduced a special reclining chair design, inspired by office chairs, which allows passengers to recline without disturbing the person seated behind them – ensuring that you won’t be disturbed either.
3. Singapore Airlines
This airline has consistently led the way in innovative advancements in air travel. In addition to offering many of the standard features found across other airlines, they now offer live television and provide access to OpenOffice software, along with USB connectivity.
2. Air New Zealand
The only factor preventing Air New Zealand from securing the top spot on this list is that not all of their aircraft are equipped with personal televisions. However, beyond that, the service is exceptional, and the food is outstanding.
1. Emirates
Emirates offers spacious seating, excellent service, and personal televisions for every passenger. On top of that, you’ll have AC power at your seat and access to StarOffice software and USB ports. Emirates also features a mini bar at the back of economy, stocked with snacks and drinks throughout the flight. You can even send emails and SMS from your seat. This airline truly deserves its number one ranking.
