Trader Joe’s issued a recall on July 21 for two types of almond cookies—Almond Windmill Cookies and Dark Chocolate Chunk and Almond Cookies—after concerns over the potential presence of rocks.
In addition to these cookies, Trader Joe’s added two more items to the recall: Fully Cooked Falafel, which could contain rocks, and Unexpected Broccoli Cheddar Soup, which might have insects. The term 'unexpected' here refers to the brand’s Unexpected Cheddar, a variety known for its surprising parmesan-like flavor.
Only the soup with use-by dates between July 18 and September 15, 2023, is affected. Customers can either dispose of it or return it to Trader Joe's for a refund. All Fully Cooked Falafel should be discarded or returned, regardless of the date. Any affected products have already been removed from store shelves and destroyed. Trader Joe's has confirmed that 'no known adverse health effects have been reported to date' regarding the soup specifically.
According to Food & Wine, the potential source of insects in the soup could be the broccoli florets. While Trader Joe's hasn't specified which ingredient is responsible for the rocks found in the cookies and falafel, it's worth noting that all three products include enriched wheat flour. No further information has been shared by the FDA about the recalls, but if any updates are released, you can find them here.
If one of your favorite Trader Joe’s products is among those recalled, rest assured that its absence will be temporary. Unfortunately, these discontinued items didn't get the same fate.
