Sticking to a vegan diet offers numerous health benefits by cutting out animal products, but sometimes you just crave a candy bar with all its dairy indulgence. Thankfully, The Hershey Company has heard your call: The chocolate giant has announced that plant-based versions of their classic Hershey’s chocolate bar and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are now available in stores.
Hershey’s Plant Based Extra Creamy with Almonds and Sea Salt, along with Reese’s Plant Based Peanut Butter Cups, both use dairy alternatives. The Reese’s cups feature oat milk in place of dairy milk for the chocolate, and the same goes for the Hershey’s bar. Both products proudly display the vegan label to prevent any confusion with their other non-vegan counterparts.
The oat-based chocolate bar first surfaced in September 2021 when a batch was found at a food truck in North Carolina after the truck owner discovered some in a big-box store. At that time, it was part of a limited test market and did not yet carry the vegan label.
As Green Matters highlights, The Hershey Company had previously released dark chocolate versions of both products. While dark chocolate is generally regarded as vegan unless it's processed with added ingredients, those particular Hershey offerings were not.
The Reese’s plant-based cups are expected to hit shelves in March, with the Hershey’s bar following in April. If you're eager to try them but can't find them yet, you can always opt for the rice-based vegan Kit Kat.
