While most people would instinctively run away from lava erupting from the ground, a team of scientists in Iceland saw it as the perfect chance for a barbecue.
A Reuters video captures the moment when researchers cook hot dogs using lava from the recently erupted Geldingardalsgos volcano in Fagradalsfjall, Iceland. After being dormant for around 6000 years, the volcano erupted violently on March 19, 2021, marking the first eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula in over eight centuries, drawing crowds of onlookers.
Though they were there to study the volcano, the researchers made time for some fun. In the video below, you can watch them grill hot dogs by placing the sausages directly onto the cooling lava, toast their buns the same way, and enjoy their meal with ketchup, all while standing in the shadow of an active volcano.
Lava has been shown to be an effective alternative to grills. Several years ago, researchers from Syracuse University's Lava Project used the intense heat of volcanic lava to prepare a meal with steaks, salmon, and hot dogs. While a lava-powered barbecue sounds exciting, getting too close to an active volcano is extremely dangerous, so it's best left to experts.
