In the early 2000s, while developing cocktail recipes for his London bar, the Townhouse, Douglas Ankrah stumbled upon something great: a blend of vanilla vodka, passion fruit purée, and passion fruit liqueur, with a champagne chaser.
“It was a total accident,” Ankrah shared with PUNCH. “I created it in 15 minutes or less. Like how Mick and Keith wrote ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ in 10 minutes.”
He named the creation the “porn star martini” because he felt it was “bold, sexy, and playful” enough for a porn star to choose. Despite the provocative name causing some controversy, the cocktail’s popularity hasn’t waned. In fact, according to a new report by apparel brand Pour Moi, it’s the most Googled cocktail worldwide. It’s also the top-searched cocktail in the UK, India, Ethiopia, Nigeria, the Philippines, and several African countries.
Sweet, fruity cocktails dominate (or at least have enough ingredients to make people search for a recipe). The piña colada secured second place overall and topped the charts in the U.S., Egypt, Russia, Chile, Indonesia, and several other nations. Aperol spritzes, in third place, are especially favored across Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and much of Europe. However, not everyone is fond of the sugary, orange drink. “The trendy, Instagram-friendly apéritifs taste like a Capri Sun after soccer practice on a hot day. Not in a good way,” food writer Rebekah Peppler commented in 2019.
The rest of the map features a diverse mix, including espresso martinis, negronis, mojitos, and Brazil’s iconic cocktail: the caipirinha made with lime and cachaça. Check out the full map below, and explore a detailed, continent-by-continent breakdown here.
