Gas stations have evolved significantly since the first one was founded in 1905. What started as simple stops to refill gas tanks has transformed into large stores offering everything from apparel to prepared meals. But which ones have captured the attention of U.S. citizens? Research by Freebets provides the answer.
In October of this year, Freebets surveyed 2,500 individuals to determine their favorite U.S. gas station chains. Respondents were asked to name gas stations that also function as convenience stores and operate within their state of residence.
Some stations have strong regional followings. Buc-ee’s leads in the southern U.S., particularly in Florida, Texas, South Carolina, and Georgia. Texas, in particular, holds Buc-ee’s in high regard, as it was founded in 1982 by a Texas A&M University graduate. Buc-ee’s is renowned for its gigantic car washes, immaculately clean restrooms, and a selection of delicious food and snacks, like Beaver Nuggets, jerky, and BBQ.
In the Mid-Atlantic region, Wawa stands as the top gas station. The states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are particularly fond of the convenience store's hoagies, iced tea, coffee, and Tastykakes. Just like Buc-ee’s, Wawa enjoys strong support in its home state. The first Wawa opened in Pennsylvania in 1964, and since then, it has grown to over 850 locations, earning a dedicated customer base.
The West—including Oregon, Washington, and California—shows a clear preference for Circle K. Alaska and Hawaii are also fans of this gas station. Circle K was one of the pioneers in offering 24-hour service, which greatly contributed to its popularity due to its round-the-clock availability.
Gas station preferences can differ greatly from state to state. Ever wondered why residents of New Jersey aren’t allowed to pump their own gas? Here’s why.
