I am Trọng Thủy, son of King Triệu Đà. After joining my father in the conquest of Âu Lạc, I committed a grave sin against my innocent and pure wife, Mị Châu. Mị Châu died at the hands of my father’s sword, and her spirit descended to the sea, becoming kin to the princess, daughter of the Sea King. To atone for my actions, I decided to descend to the Underwater Palace.
As you may know, I died by my own hand at Loa Thành Well. Now, I am but a wandering spirit. I feared the daylight, unable to meet my wife in the sun, so I resolved to visit her once nightfall arrived. As night fell, the trees that were harmless by day now appeared eerie and menacing, their rustling leaves blending with the haunting sounds of the wind. I used the cover of the trees to avoid detection by others. It was well past midnight, and my heart was cold with doubt—would Mị Châu forgive me? Despite my hesitation, the wind pushed my soul onward. Although far, I was not weary and did not require rest. Finally, the East Sea appeared before me.
I approached, feeling a sense of shame for my earlier hesitation. But the tragic death of Mị Châu and the bond of love we once shared compelled me to move forward. I descended into the sea, which, though cold, could not harm my spirit. I swam down to the ocean’s depths, where the magnificent Underwater Palace appeared before me. However, a troublesome strand of seaweed tangled around my foot. Strange, I thought—how could a spirit be ensnared by seaweed? Surely, this was a magical strand, a mystical tether binding me to Mị Châu, ensuring our reunion.
Indeed, the palace gates began to open, and Mị Châu emerged, her familiar face, her familiar hair, but the smile that once graced her lips was now gone. She had been gathering seaweed and was startled upon seeing me trapped by the seaweed. She called out in disbelief:
- Trọng... Thủy... is it really you?
Tears streamed down her face, transforming into pearls as they mingled with the salty waters of the East Sea. She embraced me, and I stammered:
- Will you... will you forgive me?
Mị Châu shook her head, her gaze shifting away, her eyes now clouded with sorrow. She replied:
- How could you treat me this way? I gave you my heart, but you betrayed me for the sake of filial duty. If I were to accept you now, would I not be dishonoring my own principles?
The pain in my heart was unbearable, but what could I do? The wrong was mine to bear, and this tragic end was my fate. Could a simple "I am sorry" erase the hurt I caused?
Faced with Mị Châu’s decision, I had no choice but to say my final farewell:
- I am sorry, Mị Châu. I betrayed you in the name of filial duty, but after seeing your precious body through your goose-feather cloak, I realized how much I loved you. Now that you’ve spoken, I must return to the Underworld and be reborn as an animal to atone for my sins.
Mị Châu said nothing, but I could see the sorrow in her eyes. She turned toward the rising sun, and the first rays of dawn illuminated the vast Underwater Palace. She abruptly turned back to me and said hurriedly:
- You must leave now!
But it was too late. The sun had risen, and fishing boats were drifting lazily on the sea. From below, the large boats appeared small, slow, like a discarded bottle on the water. I began to fade away...
The warm sunlight pierced through my being. The pain and disintegration were overwhelming. Perhaps even the heavens would not forgive a lost soul like me. I dissolved in Mị Châu’s embrace, while she remained safe, protected by the magical talisman from the Sea King.
My spirit was no longer whole, and in my final moments, I never heard Mị Châu say the words "I forgive you."

As promised before parting ways, Trọng Thủy followed the trail of goose feathers to the shore. He was overwhelmed with surprise and sorrow upon discovering Mị Châu’s lifeless body, lying in a pool of blood. He took her back and buried her at Loa Thành, forever haunted by guilt, regret, and longing for his wife. A few days later, while gazing into a well, he thought he saw Mị Châu’s image flickering on the water’s surface, and in his grief, he threw himself in, ending his life. But unexpectedly, when he regained consciousness, he found a long passage before him. He courageously entered and was met with a vast world, surrounded by water and beautiful creatures.
He wandered for what seemed like an eternity, unsure of where he was, when suddenly two soldiers approached him and demanded to know who he was, before escorting him to a large stone adorned with flowers, corals, and golden fish. There, seated beside the stone, was a beautiful princess. To his shock, he recognized her as Mị Châu, and realized he had entered the underwater palace. It turned out that, knowing Mị Châu’s kind nature, the Dragon King had adopted her as his daughter. Mị Châu was just as astonished to see Trọng Thủy. Seeing the sorrow and unresolved anger in her tear-filled eyes, Trọng Thủy broke into tears, and his cries were so mournful that even the stones could feel his pain. Trọng Thủy knelt and pleaded with Mị Châu to forgive his sins:
- My love! It is so difficult for me to be with you again. Please forgive me; I had no other choice—this was my father’s command. I know you loved me, and I never intended to deceive you, but I took advantage of your trust and betrayed you.
But perhaps Mị Châu’s anger was still too great, and she reproached her husband:
- I, too, longed to meet you. Every day, I gaze at the beautiful flowers and remember the bouquets you once gave me. I watch the schools of fish swimming joyfully and recall the days we spent together. Oh, how cruel it is! Now, I carry the shame of betraying my country, and I cannot live with the enemy of my people. How could you deceive me like this and cause me such pain? I was foolish, lost in love, and I followed you!
Trọng Thủy was filled with even greater sorrow upon hearing her words. He poured out his heart:
- At first, I intended to deceive both you and your father, but as time passed, I truly fell in love with you. My love for you is pure, and the gods can bear witness to it. Everyone who knows me knows the depth of my love. I regret so much following my father’s orders. You must understand, I was torn inside. In my confusion, I made a wrong decision. Do you know how I have suffered for this? When I realized the futility of this unjust war, it was too late. I chose death as my way of atoning. Mị Châu, please, forgive me!
The surroundings seemed to soften, the water flowing more gently, and the flowers ceased to sway. With tears in her eyes, Mị Châu spoke in a choked voice:
- I believed in your love, and I know that the feelings you had for me were true and not deceitful. I understand that a man must prioritize his country and duty. We are both innocent in this, as this war is unjust.
As Mị Châu finished speaking, the two embraced and wept. Mị Châu asked the Dragon King for permission to let them return to life and build a peaceful future together. Moved by their love, the Dragon King spoke:
- Though both of you have sinned, you have shown remorse. I am touched by your love. But if you ever betray each other again, I will ensure you never meet again.
Trọng Thủy and Mị Châu were overjoyed and thanked the Dragon King before returning to the human world. But they did not return to Âu Lạc; instead, they moved to a distant land, one where kind-hearted, hardworking people lived in a peaceful environment, with flowers and fresh air. They were married, had a son and a daughter, and lived happily ever after.

The story of An Dương Vương, Mị Châu - Trọng Thủy seemed to have ended tragically, with Mị Châu being executed by her father to settle the debts of the kingdom and family. Trọng Thủy, filled with guilt and sorrow over Mị Nương's death, eventually took his own life at the well where Mị Châu had bathed when she was alive. However, fate had not yet allowed their tragic bond to be severed. After their deaths, Mị Châu was taken in by the Water King, who adopted her as his daughter. Trọng Thủy, wandering aimlessly in the unfamiliar underwater kingdom, eventually reunited with Mị Châu.
The tale continues with Trọng Thủy descending to the Water Palace. After his death, he was supposed to enter the underworld, where the woman Mạnh Bà would offer him a bowl of soup to erase the memories of his past life and allow him to be reborn. Yet, because of his deep remorse for Mị Châu, Trọng Thủy refused the soup, choosing instead to remain a wandering spirit, searching for Mị Châu to beg for her forgiveness. Mạnh Bà, hearing his sorrow, sighed and spoke:
- What a sad fate! Both of you harbor such profound grudges, refusing the soup of forgetfulness. Few understand that to forget is the greatest gift the heavens bestow. But since you refuse, I shall not force you. I will tell you, though, that Mị Châu once told me she could never atone for her past sins, and thus, she chose to live as a wandering soul, forever tormented by her past misdeeds. If you wish to seek forgiveness, you must find her in the Eastern Sea's Water Palace.
With that, Mạnh Bà vanished, leaving behind a field of bright red Bỉ Ngạn flowers. Trọng Thủy, overwhelmed with grief, stumbled forward, silently thanking her before setting off to find Mị Châu. After years of searching, he reached the Eastern Sea and descended to the Water Palace. Despite his royal blood, he had never seen anything as splendid as this. The palace, built not from bricks but carved from vast, white stone caves, glowed brightly despite the lack of sunlight, thanks to countless pearls scattered across the walls and floor. Coral reefs lined every corner, creating an indescribably beautiful scene. As Trọng Thủy marveled at the sight, the palace guards captured him, suspecting his intentions, and brought him before the Water King.
Coincidentally, the Water King was hosting a birthday feast for his daughter. Upon seeing the intruder, the Water King was displeased and furiously demanded:
- Who is this person, disrupting my celebration and causing trouble!
The leader of the guards, kneeling, reported:
- Your Majesty, we found this man wandering suspiciously. When questioned, he claimed not to know anything, so we brought him here for your judgment.
- Stand aside. Bring this man before me.
Trọng Thủy quietly raised his head to face the Water King. Suddenly, a cup shattered with a loud crash. The Water King turned to see his daughter, the princess, with tears in her eyes, her hands trembling as she clutched her sleeve. The Water King grew more suspicious and asked:
- Where did you come from? What is your purpose here? If you do not want to die, speak quickly!
Trọng Thủy calmly replied:
- I am the son of Triệu Đà, king of the state of Triệu. Due to certain events, I have come here after my death to seek forgiveness from a woman named Mị Châu. I ask for your understanding, for I did not mean to intrude or ruin the feast.
The Water King turned to the princess and asked:
- Mị Châu, do you know this man? Why has he come all the way here?
With a quiet, tearful voice, the princess answered:
- Father, this man and I share a deep past, a bond filled with resentment. I ask you to let me speak with him privately to settle this unresolved matter. I will explain everything to you afterward!
- Very well, you may go. But be cautious, take care not to strain yourself, you have only just recovered. If this man does anything disrespectful, I will punish him accordingly.
The Water King ordered the guards to release Trọng Thủy and allowed a few servants to accompany him and Mị Châu to ensure no danger. Mị Châu thanked the Water King before silently leaving, her face filled with sorrow. Trọng Thủy followed, his heart heavy with words he could not bring himself to say. No matter what he wanted to express, he felt unworthy. When they reached a secluded pavilion, Mị Châu signaled for the attendants to leave, leaving only herself and Trọng Thủy. She stood with her back to him for a long time before speaking:
- Haven't you already tormented me enough in life? Didn't you ruin everything, causing the fall of my kingdom, the destruction of my family, and the death of my father? Why have you come here to hurt me once more?
Trọng Thủy shook his head repeatedly, falling to his knees, his voice filled with agony:
- No, no, you misunderstand me. Since your death, I have regretted everything. I never imagined we would meet again like this. Mị Châu, I refused Mạnh Bà's soup just to find you, to beg for your forgiveness. Only then will my endless regret be at peace.
Mị Châu turned sharply, her eyes filled with sorrow and fury. Her voice was cold and cutting:
- Forgiveness? Forgive you? You betrayed me, caused my kingdom to fall, made me the object of hatred, and even led to my own death at my father's hands. To you, I was just a pawn, a naive woman easily manipulated. Let me tell you, the only wish I have is never to see you again. I will never forgive you, so stop hoping!
- Mị Châu, I know my mistakes, and even if you stabbed me a thousand times, it would never be enough to make up for what I've done. But it was my foolishness, my obsession with power, that blinded me to my feelings. I made you suffer, and I know you can never forget that pain. Mị Châu, if you would forgive me, I would do anything to atone, even if I had to serve you for a hundred lifetimes. I just need your forgiveness.
- Saying forgiveness is easy, but how can I ever forgive? The pain of losing my kingdom, of being betrayed, the daily torment like thousands of arrows piercing my heart. Even though I was adopted by my parents in the Water Palace and they love me dearly, I can never forget. When I was dying on the shores, on my way to the afterlife, I met Mạnh Bà with her bowl of soup, which can make one forget everything and be reborn. But how could I simply forget everything? I refused the soup, as that is the only punishment I have for myself, to atone for my own foolishness and ignorance.
Trọng Thủy silently took Mị Châu's trembling hand:
- Why must you continue to punish yourself? It is all my fault, and I should bear the pain that was meant for you. Please forgive me. Even if you make me suffer eternally, never to be reborn, I will never complain.
Mị Châu, distressed, grabbed his hand tightly:
- Why must you do this? What can we fix now? It is too late. For a hundred years, I have thought about my father, wondering where he is, whether he still holds resentment for me. Then I think of you, torn between hatred and love for you. I never imagined I would see your regret, hear your plea for forgiveness, but even so, it does not bring me happiness. Trọng Thủy, I have not called your name in so long. I cannot forgive you. My conscience will not allow it. Perhaps it is better if we both forget. For a hundred years, both of us have suffered enough. Let us forget.
Trọng Thủy stood still, stunned. He never imagined that after all his searching, Mị Châu would still not forgive him. For a hundred years, he had hoped to hear her say those words, but now, even that was denied. Perhaps it was fitting. A man like him did not deserve forgiveness, and his conscience would never forgive him. How could Mị Châu ever forgive him? Trọng Thủy smiled bitterly.
- So be it. Our fate is to always be at odds. I accept it. But please, do not torment yourself any longer. I only ask one thing, please forget everything. Let us go to Mạnh Bà, ask for the bowl of soup, and in the next life, may we never face such tragedy again. Will you do this, Mị Châu?
- Very well. Let us forget everything. Forget the pain of this life, forget the old grudges. In the next life, may we never meet again. That is my only punishment, to punish both of us.
- Agreed. I accept.
Trọng Thủy held her hands tightly, his throat dry as he spoke those words. Together, they went to meet Mạnh Bà. Along the way, the field of Bỉ Ngạn flowers bloomed brightly. These flowers have no leaves, and perhaps they, like the lovers Mị Châu and Trọng Thủy, were destined never to meet again in this life. However, Trọng Thủy once again deceived Mị Châu. He secretly asked Mạnh Bà to let him be reborn without drinking the soup to forget, understanding her heart. Thus, Trọng Thủy carried his endless regret and pain through each life, silently protecting Mị Châu, watching her live happily with another, while he bore his sorrow through the cycle of birth, aging, illness, and death.

Consumed by despair and regret, Trọng Thủy threw himself into the well, hoping to end his life. Surprisingly, he found himself in the Underwater Palace. Had the heavens given them a second chance?
The Underwater Kingdom stretched across the vast, boundless sea. The grand palace of the Dragon King stood out, shimmering in a spectrum of seven rainbow colors. Trọng Thủy heard the melodious songs of the mermaids echoing throughout the space. As he marveled at the scenery, lost in thought and searching for the Dragon King's palace, he suddenly spotted a procession with palanquins, umbrellas, and flags approaching. Quickly, he hid in the moss to give way to the procession.
Peering into the palanquin, he saw a princess with a beautiful face, her expression filled with sorrow. Most striking of all was her crown adorned with glistening pearls. Realizing it was Mị Châu, Trọng Thủy hurried to follow the procession to the palace she resided in and sought permission to meet her.
When they met again, Trọng Thủy was overwhelmed with emotion, all his feelings of love, regret, and sorrow exploding at once. He reached out to embrace Mị Châu, but she stepped back. Though she still loved him, the memories of his betrayal lingered in her heart. Sitting down, she voiced her anger:
- How dare you come here? How could you deceive me by exploiting my trust and innocence? How could you pretend to love me, making me betray my father and my people, leading to such tragedy? Who is to blame for the fall of Âu Lạc? Tell me!
Each of Mị Châu's words pierced Trọng Thủy's heart deeply. He could only lower his head in silence, his heart overwhelmed with guilt. Torn between his duty to his father, his wife, his filial duty, and his love, it took him a while to speak:
- I am so sorry. Please understand the turmoil I faced between national duty and our relationship. I know I am a betrayer, deserving of punishment. But do you not know? I have never stopped loving you. I have never forgotten our time together. When I think of my mistakes with your father, with the kingdom of Âu Lạc, my regret knows no bounds. Please, forgive me. Let us start over.
Mị Châu thought for a long time: "Trọng Thủy has truly repented. Should I forgive him?" It seemed that they could put the past behind them and start anew, but instead, Mị Châu spoke to him:
- I am glad you have realized your mistakes, but I cannot betray my father or the kingdom of Âu Lạc again. Our love ends here. Goodbye.
Her words struck Trọng Thủy like thousands of arrows piercing his heart. In his agony, he cried out:
- Mị Châu, how can you say such cruel and heartless things? Have you forgotten the vows we made by the riverbank, swearing to be together forever? How can you treat me as a stranger? Have you really forgotten all our memories?
Emotionally overwhelmed, Mị Châu fought to hide her tears but couldn't. She cried, and Trọng Thủy cried with her. Using her sleeve to wipe away the tears, she spoke in a choked voice: "Fate has decided, we can never return to what we were. Please, go." Despite her words, Trọng Thủy couldn't bring himself to leave. His tears fell like rain, spreading into the ocean as he gazed upon Mị Châu from afar. The waves seemed to sing a mournful tune about the tragic love, betrayed and lost.
"I tell the story of Mị Châu A heart betrayed, placed upon her head The magical arrow mistakenly handed to the enemy Thus, the kingdom sank into the deep sea.
After Trọng Thủy left, Mị Châu's heart ached. She truly loved him, but what could she do? Because of him, the kingdom of Âu Lạc fell to Triệu Đà. Fate had sealed their future, and Mị Châu and Trọng Thủy could never be together. Their tragic love, broken by betrayal, was finally resolved.

It was only because Mị Châu trusted her husband that she made a grave mistake, one that angered her father, the King, who then killed her. The surroundings seemed to soften, the waters flowing more gently. After hearing these words, Mị Châu replied with a choked voice:
- I believe in you, I believe that your love for me was not false. I understand that a man must prioritize his kingdom, and I know the fault does not lie with us but with the unjust war that forced us into this position.
In silence, the couple embraced and wept together. But then Mị Châu spoke again:
- Though I believe in your love, we cannot be together. I have committed a grave sin against my country, against my father, and I can no longer face the world. I cannot live with someone who deceived my people. I must beg your forgiveness, but we cannot live the life we once imagined. Please, after you return, be a wise king, one who cares for the people.
Trọng Thủy understood that he could no longer persuade Mị Châu. He realized she could not return with him, as both had wronged each other. He no longer wished to be selfish. Mị Châu then asked the Dragon King to allow Trọng Thủy to return to the mortal world. From that day on, Trọng Thủy vowed never to marry again, remaining faithful to his late wife. He also fulfilled his promise to become a wise and honorable king.

After learning of the tragic death of his beloved wife, Trọng Thủy was overcome with grief, torment, and guilt for causing Mị Châu’s demise. For days, he wandered in a daze, lost in thought, as if his soul had departed. One day, as he gazed into the well at Loa Thành, he thought he saw Mị Châu's figure fleeting beneath the surface, and in that moment, he plunged headfirst into the well, ending his life.
The well of Loa Thành was known to be incredibly deep, and Trọng Thủy fell for what seemed like an eternity, never reaching the bottom. During his fall, his head struck a rock, causing a severe injury, and he lost consciousness. When he regained his senses, he found himself in an unfamiliar place. As he sat there, confused about what had occurred, a large golden carp swam toward him, its tail held firmly with its fins like a spear. The fish approached and spoke:
- Greetings! Our Dragon King found your body washed ashore at the Eastern Sea, and in compassion, he used divine water to revive you. Now that you have recovered, the Dragon King invites you to meet him.
Trọng Thủy replied promptly:
- Ah, I see! I was wondering where I was. Very well, lead me to meet the Dragon King. And so, the golden carp guided him to the Dragon King's realm. Before him, a vast underwater world unfolded, filled with vibrant seaweed, corals, and a myriad of beautiful creatures he had never seen. Schools of fish swam and danced joyously. Upon reaching the Dragon King, Trọng Thủy thanked him for saving his life. He also expressed his deep sorrow and asked to meet Mị Châu. The Dragon King, understanding Trọng Thủy’s heart, arranged for their reunion. Trọng Thủy rushed forward to take Mị Châu's hand. She was taken aback but, upon seeing him, her heart fluttered. Standing before him, she longed to embrace him but, after a moment, composed herself and gently pulled her hand away:
- You! You who carried out the task of conquering Âu Lạc for Triệu Đà, why have you come down here to seek me?
Each word Mị Châu spoke cut deeply into Trọng Thủy's heart, causing unbearable pain. He responded with agony:
- Oh, Mị Châu, my love! How could you be so harsh? I know I am guilty, and I am filled with regret and self-recrimination. But please understand my feelings for you, and forgive me.
Mị Châu’s heart was torn. She deeply wanted to forgive Trọng Thủy, but she remembered her own betrayal of her country and her father. With a heavy heart, she asked:
- Why did you betray me and cause me such suffering? I was so naive, following your every move because of love.
Trọng Thủy was consumed with sorrow, lamenting:
- My dearest, please understand that I had no choice. I could not disobey the command of the King. At first, I intended to deceive you and your father, but over time, I truly fell in love with you — a pure and innocent girl. How could I ever forget you? A marriage, even for a day, creates such deep bonds. When I realized the cruelty and injustice of the war, it was already too late. By blindly following the King's orders, I became a criminal, a traitor, and I am condemned by all. I must pay the price for my happiness. Mị Châu, once more, I beg you to forgive me.
Everything around them grew still, as though the world shared in the sorrow of the young couple. Mị Châu’s tears fell freely, torn between anger and pity. Trọng Thủy was a victim of a senseless war. Yet, reason told her that she could not let her heart betray her country again. With a soft voice, she replied:
- Enough, do not speak anymore. I thank you for your sincere feelings, but I cannot forgive you — a traitor to Âu Lạc. I cannot! From now on, do not come to me. I do not want this.
Trọng Thủy’s heart shattered. Overcome with grief, he begged one last time:
- Mị Châu, please forgive me. I have learned my mistake, and I am truly sorry. No matter the punishment or suffering I must endure, I ask for your forgiveness and the chance to see you again.
Mị Châu remained resolute in her refusal. And just like that, both Mị Châu and her palace vanished. Left alone, Trọng Thủy, in his sadness and despair, wished that the eternal sea could wash away his sins.
- Mị Châu, I long for the day when we can meet again, far away in a time without the wars between our people. In that future, there will be no division, and love will return to us.
As soon as he finished speaking, Trọng Thủy turned to stone, forever to rest at the bottom of the ocean.

The pain Mị Châu spoke of was nothing compared to the agony Trọng Thủy felt. He lowered his head in silence, filled with endless regret. On one side, there was his father, on another, his wife, on yet another, his duty to his country, and on the other, his love. It took a long while before he could speak:
- I am deeply regretful. Please understand my heart. What could I have done between my duty to my country and our marital bond? I know I betrayed you, and I deserve punishment. But do you know? I have never been able to forget you or the memories of our love. Every time I think of my wrongs towards your father and our country, my heart aches with regret. I beg you to forgive me. Let us start over.
Mị Châu thought deeply for a long moment: "Trọng Thủy has truly repented. Should I forgive him?" It seemed they could move past their past and start anew, but no. Mị Châu replied to him:
- I am glad that you have recognized your mistakes, but I cannot betray my father or my country. Our love ends here. Farewell.
Her words were like arrows piercing Trọng Thủy's heart. In his anguish, he cried out:
- Mị Châu, how can you speak such cruel, heartless words? Have you forgotten the vows we made by the riverbank, promising to live and die together? How could you treat me as a stranger? All our shared memories, have you truly forgotten them?
Overcome with emotion, Mị Châu tried to hold back her tears but could not. She cried, and Trọng Thủy cried with her. Wiping away her tears with the hem of her gown, Mị Châu spoke in a choked voice: "Fate has already sealed our destiny. We cannot rekindle the love we once had. Please leave." Hearing this, Trọng Thủy still could not bring himself to leave. He wept, his tears blending into the sea, spreading like the sorrowful waves that forever carry the echoes of their tragic love story.
"I tell the tale of Mị Châu
The heart deceived, placed on the crown
The sacred crossbow unwittingly given to the enemy
Thus, the kingdom's fate sank to the depths."
After Trọng Thủy departed, Mị Châu's heart ached. She truly loved him, but how could she ignore the loss of Âu Lạc to Triệu Đà because of him? Fate had sealed their paths, and they could no longer be together. Their tragic love story had reached its bittersweet end.
