- Ò ó o… o!
At the sound of the rooster crowing, the youngest daughter awoke, disoriented. It took her a moment to recall where she was. She had narrowly escaped from the belly of a huge shark, stranded alone on a deserted island, with only a pair of chickens as companions.
Her mind drifted back to the strange events that had led to this moment. Seeing her two older sisters stubbornly refuse to bring food to Sọ Dừa, she had reluctantly agreed. 'Though his looks are unusual, he can speak and even converse in a rather charming way,' she thought.
From afar, she heard the sound of a flute playing, curious who could be playing it. Could it be Sọ Dừa? But how could he play the flute? She remembered when he first came to her house. He had looked so odd, rolling around like a pumpkin, yet he spoke with such grace. Her sisters turned away from him, but she didn't feel afraid—she felt sympathy for the strange-looking man, especially when she saw how diligent he was. He worked hard, taking care of the cattle, which all grew plump and healthy. She went to bring him lunch but also wanted to see how he managed the cattle.
As she got closer, she was even more astonished. There was a hammock, and someone was lying there playing the flute! Was it a relative of Sọ Dừa? Where was he? Confused, she stepped on a twig, making a noise. Looking down, she saw the hammock and the young man had vanished. Only Sọ Dừa remained under the tree, grinning widely:
- Hello, little sister! Are you here to bring me lunch or to visit me?
She didn't respond, still puzzled. She asked him,
- Where did the man playing the flute go?
Sọ Dừa denied it completely:
- You must have mistaken it, I've been here all along. There was no one else playing the flute!
She refused to believe she had mistaken it. Then, it hit her—how could Sọ Dừa manage the herd of cattle and still be a young man with the hammock and flute vanishing like that? She didn't ask more questions, just handed him the lunch and left, her heart filled with joy.
When the rich man asked his daughters if any of them would agree to marry Sọ Dừa, it was only a formality, knowing no one would want to marry such an odd-looking man. But the youngest surprised her father:
- I'll marry whoever you choose, Father!
Her two sisters scoffed at her foolishness, but the rich man, already having promised his wife, reluctantly set the wedding date. He set a challenging test, but the youngest was confident, hoping it wouldn't be too difficult for her future husband. Sure enough, Sọ Dừa not only met the challenge but brought a whole entourage of servants, leaving everyone amazed. They had never seen anyone visiting his house before.
At the wedding banquet, she took Sọ Dừa inside and whispered:
- Come out, my dear husband!
Sọ Dừa smiled, asking her to close her eyes. When she opened them, the young man from earlier was standing before her. The couple walked out together, greeting the guests. Everyone was astonished, and they had to explain multiple times. Sọ Dừa even had to transform back into his original form before they believed it. The celebration grew even livelier.
Sọ Dừa became a scholar, passing exams to become a top official, and was sent abroad on a diplomatic mission, leaving his wife behind. Little did she know, her jealous older sisters had plotted to harm her and steal her husband. They invited her to go boating and then pushed her into the sea. A giant fish swallowed her whole, but luckily, Sọ Dừa had anticipated this. He had given her a knife, an egg, and a flint stone. With the knife, she cut open the fish, killing it, and was washed ashore. She had fish to eat, a fire to cook with, and a chicken for company.
One day, while cooking fish, the rooster crowed loudly:
- Ò. ó. o… It's the official, come to take my wife home!
She rushed out and saw her husband returning, having heard the rooster. He stopped to pick her up, and they joyfully reunited.
Following her husband's instructions, she hid in the boat as they neared home. She overheard her sisters recounting her tragic death. She stepped out, and they were so embarrassed, they left without saying a word.
She and her husband lived happily ever after.

Once upon a time, there was a poor couple who had no land to farm, so they had to work for a wealthy landlord in the village. Despite working hard and living honestly, they had no children to care for. They were saddened but consoled themselves by saying, “Children are a blessing from heaven.”
One day, the wife discovered she was pregnant after drinking water from a coconut shell in the forest. The couple was overjoyed and thanked the heavens for understanding their longing. However, when the child was born, it turned out to be deformed—neither human nor animal. The child had no arms or legs, and it rolled around like a coconut. The parents were heartbroken as they had hoped so much for a child. The mother wanted to abandon the child, but it suddenly spoke, begging:
- Mother, please don’t leave me. Let me stay with you!
The mother, moved by the plea, decided to keep the child and named him Coconut Shell.
Time passed quickly, and everything changed. People grew older, but Coconut Shell remained the same, still round and rolling around like a coconut. However, he became useful to the family after his mother arranged for him to work at the landlord’s house. The landlord thought he was useless, but was surprised to find that Coconut Shell could do many tasks, especially herding cows. Under his care, the cows grew strong and healthy, which pleased the landlord.
During the harvest season, the landlord’s family worked hard, and the three daughters were assigned to bring lunch to the fields. Because of his ugly appearance, the older daughters treated Coconut Shell badly and ignored him, not even bringing him food. Only the youngest daughter, who was both beautiful and kind-hearted, treated him well.
She even fell in love with him after realizing he wasn’t an ordinary person. One day, as usual, she brought him lunch, but as she approached, she heard a beautiful melody played on a flute in the distance. Peering through the trees, she saw a handsome young man with deep eyes, lost in the music. Her heart fluttered, but when she arrived, she found only Coconut Shell.
At the end of the harvest, Coconut Shell urged his mother to go to the landlord to ask for the youngest daughter’s hand in marriage. Surprised but agreeing, the mother went. The landlord set a challenging dowry: a golden chest, ten bolts of red silk, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of wine. Coconut Shell managed to gather everything, but no one was willing to marry him except the youngest daughter.
On the wedding day, something unexpected happened: the coconut-shaped, armless and legless figure was replaced by the handsome young man the youngest daughter had seen earlier. Everyone was shocked and congratulated the bride. Later, Coconut Shell, now transformed, studied hard and became a scholar.
Seeing the happiness of the youngest daughter, the older sisters became jealous. So, while Coconut Shell was away, they plotted to throw her into the sea to be eaten by sharks. Luckily, she survived and was brought back by her husband. The two jealous sisters were punished for their deeds.

Once upon a time, there was an elderly farming couple who lived kindly and honestly, never harming anyone. Despite their good deeds, they remained childless even at the age of fifty. One hot afternoon, the wife went into the forest to gather firewood for her master. Thirsty and unable to find a stream, she saw a coconut shell filled with rainwater by a tree and drank from it. This simple act led to her becoming pregnant, and soon she gave birth to a child as round as a coconut, with no arms or legs. Though heartbroken, she decided to keep the child after it pleaded with her not to discard it.
As the child grew, named Coconut, he asked his mother to allow him to work as a shepherd for a wealthy landowner. Every day, he would roll the cattle to the field in the morning and roll them back in the evening. The landowner was pleased with the well-fed cattle and appreciated Coconut’s help. The landowner’s three daughters would take turns bringing him meals in the fields.
Eventually, Coconut asked his mother to approach the landowner for his daughter’s hand in marriage. The landowner, mocking Coconut’s poor background, demanded a dowry of a jar of gold, ten pieces of silk, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of wine. Coconut’s mother returned home and informed him of the conditions. On the agreed day, Coconut managed to gather all the required items. The landowner, overwhelmed by the generosity, summoned his daughters to ask for their opinion. The two older daughters sneered at the proposal, while the youngest quietly consented.
On the wedding day, the celebrations were grand. But when it was time to bring the bride, no one saw Coconut’s grotesque form. Instead, they saw a handsome young man standing beside the bride. Everyone was shocked and delighted, but the two older sisters were filled with envy and regret.
From that day on, Coconut and his wife lived happily together. Coconut proved to be highly intelligent, studying day and night, and soon became the top scholar of the year. However, not long after, he was sent by the king on a diplomatic mission. Before leaving, he gave his wife a flint stone, a knife, and two eggs for protection.
Out of jealousy, his two sisters-in-law plotted to kill the younger wife in his absence, hoping to take her place. They lured her to a boat trip out to sea and threw her into the water. A giant fish swallowed her whole. Luckily, with the knife she carried, she killed the fish and managed to escape to an island. She used the flint to start a fire and survived by roasting the fish. On the island, the two eggs hatched into chickens, which became her companions.
In the end, the story of Coconut is a beautiful fairy tale that teaches us that good things happen to kind-hearted people, while those who are evil face the consequences. We must live kindly and avoid selfishness and greed, for we will ultimately receive the fruits of our actions.
One day, a passing boat heard the rooster crow three times:
- Ò… ó… o… It must be the boat sent by the scholar to bring my wife back.
Overjoyed, the couple was reunited. The two sisters-in-law, ashamed of their wickedness, fled in disgrace.

The collection of folk tales is filled with many remarkable stories. One of the most famous is the tale of the Coconut Skull.
Once upon a time, a poor farmer couple worked for a wealthy landlord. They were diligent and kind but had no children despite being over fifty years old. One day, the wife went into the forest to gather firewood. Under the scorching sun and with no water in sight, she stumbled upon a coconut shell filled with rainwater under a large tree. She drank it to quench her thirst and brought it back home.
Not long after, her husband passed away. She gave birth to a child with no arms or legs, round like a coconut. Saddened, she considered abandoning the child, but the baby spoke:
- Mother! I am a person, please don't abandon me, I beg you.
Moved by her love, she kept the child and named him Coconut Skull. As he grew, he remained as round and immobile as ever. The mother, saddened, said to him:
- Other children at your age are already herding cattle, but you can’t do anything.
Coconut Skull replied:
- I can herd cattle just like others. Please ask the landlord if I can do it.
Despite initial hesitation due to his unusual appearance, the landlord agreed, thinking it would be less expensive to keep him and his work would require less effort.
Coconut Skull was great at herding cattle. Day after day, he rolled behind the cows to the fields, and at night, he would roll them back home, making them fatter and healthier. The landlord was pleased.
During harvest, the landlord's servants were all busy, so he asked his three daughters to take turns bringing meals to Coconut Skull. The two older daughters were mean and often ignored him, but the youngest treated him kindly.
One day, when it was her turn to bring food, the youngest daughter heard the sound of a flute from afar. She hid behind a bush and saw a handsome young man playing the flute for the cows. However, when she moved, the man vanished, leaving only Coconut Skull. Realizing that Coconut Skull was not an ordinary person, she grew fond of him, secretly bringing him delicious food.
At the end of the season, Coconut Skull urged his mother to ask the landlord for his daughter's hand. The mother was taken aback but finally agreed to ask. The landlord mockingly said:
- If you want to marry my daughter, you must bring me a golden bowl, ten silk cloths, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of wine.
The mother thought her son would give up, but Coconut Skull assured her that he would fulfill the request. On the appointed day, she was astonished to find that all the requested items were there, along with a dozen attendants carrying the gifts. The landlord, amazed, said to her:
- Let me ask my daughters if any of them will marry Coconut Skull.
The two older daughters rejected him, but the youngest lowered her head, silently agreeing. The landlord accepted the gifts and agreed to the marriage.
At the wedding, Coconut Skull organized a grand feast. During the procession, no one saw his ugly form; instead, they saw a handsome young man beside his bride. Everyone was surprised and delighted, while the two older sisters were filled with regret and jealousy.
They lived happily ever after. Coconut Skull was also very intelligent and studied hard, eventually passing the royal exam with honors. Soon, the king sent him on a diplomatic mission. Before leaving, he gave his wife a flint stone, a knife, and two eggs, instructing her to always keep them close for when they might be needed.
The jealous sisters, seeing that Coconut Skull was away, plotted to kill the wife and take her place. They invited her on a boat trip, then threw her into the sea, where a giant fish swallowed her. Luckily, she had the knife and used it to kill the fish. The corpse of the fish washed ashore on a remote island, where she cut herself out and survived by roasting the fish with the flint stone. She also kept the two eggs, which hatched into two beautiful chickens.
One day, a boat passed the island, and the rooster crowed three times:
- Ó… ó… ó… The royal envoy's ship is coming to bring my wife home.
The royal envoy arrived, and the reunited couple rejoiced. Back home, they celebrated, though the wife was kept hidden. The two sisters, feeling smug, were quick to tell the story of their sister's misfortune. But when the wife was revealed, they were filled with shame and fled, never to return.
The story of Coconut Skull leaves a deep impression on readers, depicting a wise and kind-hearted hero. It also highlights the compassion for gentle souls and the sympathy for those who are less fortunate. This is my favorite story.

In the treasure trove of Vietnamese folk literature, there are many remarkable fairy tales. Each story imparts an important lesson about being a good person. 'Coconut Skull' is one such tale. It narrates the life of a boy named Sọ Dừa while also emphasizing the importance of living a righteous life.
The story has always stayed clear in my mind thanks to my grandmother's narration. Long ago, a poor couple worked for a wealthy landowner. They were kind-hearted and hardworking, yet they had no children until they were in their fifties.
One day, the wife went to the forest to gather firewood. It was very hot, and she was parched, yet she could not find any streams. Suddenly, she spotted a coconut shell filled with rainwater near a tree. She quickly drank it to quench her thirst. Soon after, she found out she was pregnant.
After some time, the husband passed away, and she gave birth to a son who was without limbs, round like a coconut. She was heartbroken and thought about abandoning him, but the child spoke up:
- Mother, I am your son! Please don't abandon me, it would be cruel.
Moved by love, the mother decided to keep and name him Sọ Dừa.
As he grew, Sọ Dừa remained the same—rolling around by his mother's feet, unable to do anything. His mother felt frustrated and complained. Sọ Dừa, hearing this, asked her:
- I may not be able to do much, but I can take care of the cows. Could you ask the landowner if I could do that?
Though skeptical due to his appearance, the mother decided to ask. The landowner, thinking it would be easier to feed and employ Sọ Dừa, agreed.
Thus, Sọ Dừa tended the cattle for the landowner. Every day, he rolled after the cows into the fields, and by evening, he rolled back with them. The cows became well-fed, and the landowner was pleased.
During harvest, all the servants were busy, so the landowner had his three daughters take turns bringing food to Sọ Dừa. The two older sisters were haughty and cruel, often ignoring him, but the youngest, who was kind-hearted and warm, always treated him with respect.
One day, when it was the youngest daughter's turn to bring him food, she heard the sweet sound of a flute from a distance. She hid behind a bush and saw a handsome young man sitting on a hammock, playing the flute for the cows grazing around him. But as soon as he heard her, he disappeared, leaving only Sọ Dừa. Over time, the young girl realized that Sọ Dừa was not an ordinary person, and she began to fall in love with him, secretly offering him food whenever she could.
One day, Sọ Dừa asked his mother to speak with the landowner about marrying his daughter. His mother, initially shocked, eventually agreed.
The mother went to the landowner, who mocked her, saying:
- If you want to marry my daughter, bring me a certain amount of gifts: one coconut shell full of gold, ten pieces of silk, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of wine.
The mother thought that Sọ Dừa would give up, but to her surprise, Sọ Dừa made sure all the gifts were ready. On the appointed day, not only did the house fill with the required gifts, but servants also carried them to the landowner’s house. The landowner, astounded, called his daughters to ask for their opinions. The two older daughters rejected Sọ Dừa, but the youngest bowed and consented. Thus, the landowner agreed to the marriage.
On the wedding day, Sọ Dừa threw a grand feast, with servants bustling about. When the procession arrived, no one saw the boy with no limbs. Instead, a handsome young man stood beside the youngest daughter. Everyone was amazed, and the two older sisters were filled with envy and regret.
The couple lived happily ever after. Sọ Dừa was incredibly intelligent, and after years of hard study, he became the highest-ranking scholar. Soon, the emperor called him to serve as an envoy. Before leaving, he gave his wife a firestone, a knife, and two eggs, advising her to keep them close in case of need.
Envious of their sister, the two older sisters plotted to kill her in order to take her place as the wife of the scholar. They invited the youngest to row a boat with them, then pushed her into the sea. A giant fish swallowed her whole. Fortunately, the young woman had the knife with her. She killed the fish, and its carcass washed up on a deserted island. There, she used the stone to start a fire and lived off the fish, waiting for a passing boat to rescue her. During her time on the island, the eggs hatched, and two beautiful chickens became her companions.
'Coconut Skull' is truly a meaningful fairy tale, reminding us that “good things come to those who do good,” and that kindness and honesty will always lead to happiness, while evil will result in suffering. We should all strive to be kind and avoid selfishness, or we will face the consequences.
One day, a ship passed the island, and the rooster crowed three times:
- Ò… ó… o... This is the ship of the scholar, come to bring my wife home.
The scholar’s ship stopped, and the two met again, joyously reunited. Back home, a grand feast was held, but the wife was kept hidden. The older sisters rejoiced in the thought of their sister's misfortune, but when they finally saw her, they were ashamed and quietly left, never to return.

Not long after, the husband passed away. She gave birth to a child with no limbs, and his body was round and hairy like a coconut. She was sad and was about to discard the child when it spoke to her.
- Mother! I am your child! Please don't abandon me, it would be cruel. The old woman, moved by the words, decided to keep the child and named him Coconut Shell.
As he grew up, Coconut Shell remained the same, rolling around helplessly and unable to do anything. His mother, distressed by this, suggested he work as a herdsman for the landowner.
Upon hearing about Coconut Shell, the landowner was hesitant. However, thinking it would cost little to feed him and his labor was insignificant, he agreed. Surprisingly, the boy was very skilled at herding. Every day, he rolled after the cattle to the fields, and at night, he rolled them back home. The cattle were always well-fed, and the landowner was pleased!
During the harvest season, when all the servants were busy, the landowner asked his three daughters to take turns bringing food to Coconut Shell. Of these daughters, the two older ones were arrogant and cruel, often ignoring Coconut Shell, while the youngest, who was kind-hearted, treated him well.
One day, it was the youngest daughter's turn to bring food to Coconut Shell. As she approached the foot of the mountain, she heard the sweet sound of a flute. Sneaking up, she saw a handsome young man sitting on a hammock, playing the flute for the herd of cattle. However, when he stood up, everything vanished, leaving only Coconut Shell lying there. After many such encounters, the youngest daughter realized that Coconut Shell was not an ordinary person and began to feel affection for him.
At the end of the rental period, Coconut Shell returned home and urged his mother to ask the landowner's daughter to marry him. The old woman was astonished but, seeing her son's persistence, eventually agreed.
When the landowner's family saw the bride price brought by Coconut Shell's mother, they mocked her:
- If you want to marry my daughter, you must bring a gold basin, ten pieces of silk, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of wine.
Reluctantly, the old woman returned, thinking that it was futile to marry her son off. To her surprise, on the appointed day, everything requested appeared in their house, along with servants carrying the dowry to the landowner's house. The landowner, overwhelmed by the sight, called for his three daughters to ask their opinions. The two older daughters sneered and turned away, but the youngest one, shy and ful, nodded in agreement.
On the wedding day, Coconut Shell laid out a lavish feast, and the servants were bustling about. When the procession arrived to fetch the bride, no one saw the ugly Coconut Shell, only a handsome young man standing beside the youngest daughter. Everyone was stunned and delighted, while the two older daughters felt a mix of regret and jealousy.
From then on, Coconut Shell and his wife lived happily together. Not only that, but Coconut Shell proved to be incredibly intelligent. He worked tirelessly day and night on his studies, and that year, he passed the imperial exams with the highest honors. However, not long after, the emperor sent him on a diplomatic mission. Before leaving, he gave his wife a flint stone, a knife, and two eggs for protection.
Envious of the youngest daughter, the two older sisters plotted to harm her and replace her as the wife of the state official. Taking advantage of the fact that he was away, they tricked the youngest into rowing a boat out to sea and pushed her into the water. The girl was swallowed by a giant fish, but luckily, she escaped using the knife. She washed up on an island, used the knife to carve herself out of the fish's belly, and made a fire to cook the fish. She survived for a while on the island, and the two eggs hatched into a pair of beautiful chickens, which became her companions.
One day, a ship passed by the island, and the rooster crowed loudly:
Ò... ó... o. This is the ship of the state official coming to bring my wife back.
The official sent a boat to check, and to everyone's surprise, it was his wife. The two reunited, overjoyed and emotional. After bringing his wife back home, the state official hosted a celebration, but kept her hidden from everyone. The two older sisters, pleased by the misfortune they thought had befallen the youngest, eagerly spread rumors about her tragic fate. The state official said nothing, and only after the celebration did he reveal his wife to the public. The two older sisters, ashamed and humiliated, quietly left and never returned.

Once upon a time, there was an elderly couple who were very poor and had to work for a wealthy family. They longed for a child, but despite waiting until the age of fifty, they had no children.
One hot afternoon, the old woman went into the forest to gather firewood. She was extremely thirsty, but could not find any streams. Suddenly, she spotted a coconut shell filled with rainwater under a large tree and drank eagerly to quench her thirst. When she returned home, she discovered that she was pregnant.
Not long after, the old man passed away. The woman gave birth to a child resembling a coconut, with no arms or legs. She was so distressed that she considered abandoning the child, but the baby spoke:
- Mother, I am a person. Please don’t abandon me, it would be cruel.
Moved by her child's plea, she kept him and named him Coconut Shell.
As Coconut Shell grew, he remained unchanged, rolling at his mother's feet, unable to do anything. One day, the mother complained that Coconut Shell could not help herd the cattle. He replied:
- I can do it, mother! Just ask the rich man if I can herd the cattle for him.
Seeing how determined her child was, the mother approached the rich man. The man hesitated because of Coconut Shell's unusual appearance, but decided it would be easier to feed him and that herding the cattle would be light work, so he agreed.
From that day, Coconut Shell worked at the rich man's house, and he became very skilled at herding cattle. The herd grew healthy and fat, and the rich man was pleased.
The rich man had three daughters who frequently brought lunch to Coconut Shell. The two older daughters treated him cruelly, while the youngest daughter, who was kind-hearted, treated him well.
One afternoon, as the youngest daughter brought lunch to Coconut Shell, she heard beautiful flute music. She hid behind some bushes and saw a handsome young man sitting on a hammock, playing the flute to the cattle. When he noticed her, the young man vanished, and only Coconut Shell remained. Realizing that Coconut Shell was not an ordinary person, she began to develop feelings for him. She secretly gave him tasty food whenever she could.
One day, Coconut Shell rolled over to ask his mother to propose marriage to the rich man's daughter. The mother was shocked but decided to honor his request. When the rich man heard the proposal, he sneered:
- If you want to marry my daughter, you need to bring the proper dowry: a golden chest, ten pieces of red silk, ten fat pigs, and ten jars of rice wine.
The mother thought that Coconut Shell would give up the idea, but to her surprise, he assured her that he would bring all the dowry items.
On the promised day, the mother was astonished to find not only the requested items but also servants carrying the dowry to the rich man’s house. The rich man was overwhelmed and said:
- Let me ask my daughters if any of them would accept Coconut Shell as a husband. The two older daughters refused outright, but the youngest daughter bowed her head, indicating her acceptance. The rich man, reluctantly, accepted the dowry and gave his youngest daughter to Coconut Shell.
From that day forward, Coconut Shell transformed into a handsome young man, and they lived happily and prosperously. The two older daughters were consumed with jealousy.
Coconut Shell diligently studied and eventually passed the imperial exams with top honors. Soon after, the king sent him on an official mission. Before leaving, he gave his wife a firestone, a knife, and two eggs, instructing her to keep them with her in case of need.
While Coconut Shell was away, his two jealous sisters-in-law plotted to kill him. They invited him to go rowing, then pushed him into the sea. A large fish swallowed the youngest sister whole. She used the knife to kill the fish and, after being washed ashore on a deserted island, she used the firestone to cook the fish. The two eggs hatched into two beautiful chickens, which kept her company on the island.
One day, a boat with a royal flag sailed by. The rooster crowed three times:
- Oh... oh... oh!
- It must be the boat of the imperial envoy coming to take my wife home.
The royal boat docked, and the couple was joyously reunited. Back home, the imperial envoy held a feast to celebrate, inviting all the relatives. The two jealous sisters-in-law, unaware of the truth, were certain they would become the new wife of the envoy. They wept and mourned the loss of the youngest sister, thinking she was dead. The envoy said nothing, and after the banquet, he called his wife over. When the two sisters-in-law saw her, they were so embarrassed that they slipped away and disappeared for good.
