The German Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City was established on January 15, 1992, under the Ministry of Education and Training’s official letter No. 378. In 2002, it was officially renamed to the Department of German Language and Literature according to Decision No. 164/QĐ-TCCB from the University Rector. Currently, nearly 200 students are enrolled across all four academic years, with around 60 new students admitted annually.

The German Department boasts a team of young, capable lecturers, most of whom have received training in Germany. Currently, there are 12 full-time faculty members. Additionally, the department benefits from the expertise of German specialists through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) program, and there are 4 native-speaking lecturers with Master's degrees.
