Tran Hung Dao High School was established by Decision No. 62/2000/QD-UB dated August 16, 2000, by the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee. On May 26, 2003, following Decision 57/2003/QD–UB, the school split into two separate institutions: Chu Van An Secondary School and Tran Hung Dao High School. By the 2017-2018 academic year, the school employed 69 staff members, including 3 administrators, 58 teachers, 8 support staff, and notably, 4 master's degree holders.

Initially, the school had only 18 classes (both middle and high school) with 28 staff members. It inherited facilities from the Provincial Education Management School, which meant that teaching and learning equipment was almost nonexistent. The student population grew rapidly each year, reaching nearly 2,000 students and 42 classes by the 2010-2011 school year. Since then, the faculty has been fully qualified, with 3% holding advanced degrees. Hung Vuong Specialized High School was established on May 15, 1993, originally named Gia Lai Provincial Specialized High School. On July 20, 1998, the school was renamed Hung Vuong High School.
