2. 70th Anniversary of the Victory of Dien Bien Phu 7/5/1954 - 7/5/2024
Celebrating the victory at Dien Bien
Flags flying across the three regions, joy fills the air
A festive day for the nation
Seventy years have passed, a beautiful chapter of history
Children dance and smile with joy
The Xoe dance and bamboo pole dance, bright red cheeks
A towering monument in the sky
The victory stele of Vietnam’s heroes
Welcoming visitors from all over the world
The fortifications now in ruins, the golden dream is gone
The enemy bows their heads in defeat
The Geneva Agreement signed, Vietnam triumphs
Trenches crisscross the hills
(Slow and Sure Victory) leading to a counterattack
The soil and hills mixed with red blood
The memory of martyrs lives in the hearts of the people
Uncle Ho's words echo across the military
Determined to win, forgetting self and defeating the enemy
The smoke of bombs and fire fills the sky
Him Lam and Hong Cum were completely taken by us ....
In the end, General Cat surrenders
Dien Bien Phu opens a golden chapter in history
Today, the city stands proud
A tourist destination inviting visitors from around the world.

3. The Victory of Dien Bien Phu
Remembering the seventh of May (7/5/1954)
Our troops triumphed, bringing glory
Dien Bien marks a golden page
A radiant chapter in history
We struck at fortifications everywhere
Mường Thanh, Hong Cum shattered, the enemy scattered
Him Lam in the North-West, boundless
On Hill A One (A1), the enemy surged but we surrounded them
Defeated, the enemy sank into the mud
General De Cat raised his hand in surrender
Celebrating the glorious victory
On May seventh (7/5), the village rejoiced together
Vietnam, the heroic land
Dien Bien echoes in history, shaking the world
The enemy buried deep
The Mường region blooms in vibrant colors of homeland
Thanks to Uncle Ho’s guidance
Our Party led us skillfully in all directions
The enemy retreated, defeated
The country shines bright, in peace and joy

Celebrating the resounding victory of Dien Bien
May 1954, five years and five months of triumph and cheer
Vietnam drove General De Cat to retreat

Commander-in-Chief, General Vo Nguyen Giap
Alongside our troops, resolved to fight till the end
Day and night, enduring hardships in the jungle
The Party led us to resounding success
Colonial France, brutal and tyrannical, fell from grace
Surrendering to the clever strategy of Vietnam
Our soldiers and people were brave and resilient
Conquering all, the enemy was defeated
Nearly a century of sorrow, now filled with hope
Vietnam has triumphed gloriously
Both regions are flourishing, renewed
Dien Bien Phu stands as an everlasting golden milestone.

7. Nine Years to Build Dien Bien
Nine years of building the Dien Bien battlefront
Adding to history’s golden legacy
Nine years of resisting France with pride
Autumn and winter of 1947 echoed through the skies*
The 1950 border campaign*
The Sông Lô* river roared as the battle raged
In Dien Bien, the French paratroopers landed
The A1 hill exploded, capturing prisoners of war
Him Lam and Hong Cum were terrified
France tried to hold its ground but awaited defeat
Dien Bien fell, smoke filled the air
The trenches collapsed as General De Castris and the prisoners were captured
On May 7, the glory day arrived
Dien Bien’s victory echoed through the land
Long live the Nation of Vietnam
One half of the country now stood in peace and glory
The North revived, full of hope
Socialism spread its kindness across the world
Democratic reforms took the lead
Forever grateful to the Party and Uncle Ho
Vietnam stands bright with truth
Farmers now own their land, no longer suffering
Nine years of resisting France with courage
Dien Bien’s glorious history will forever shine
Notes:
Autumn-Winter Campaign* = 1947
1950 Border Campaign* = 1950

8. Hail the Dien Bien Soldiers
The news came at midnight
Urgent, urgent
Horses gallop up the slopes
Torches light up the forests
Bells ring with good tidings
Loudspeakers announce it at every door
The village lights up with red lamps...
Hail the Dien Bien soldiers
Hail comrade Võ Nguyên Giáp
Thunder strikes day and night, hitting the French invaders!
Glory to our homeland
To the Democratic Republic of Vietnam
Glory to Hồ Chí Minh, our eternal father
Fight to the end, the great red and gold flag flies high!
The resistance lasted three thousand days
There was no night as joyful as tonight
This historic night, Dien Bien shines bright
Across the nation, like a medal on the chest
Our people, a heroic nation!
Dien Bien is far away, a thousand miles apart
Yet the hearts of the four seas beat as one
Tonight, friends near and far
Will surely share in the joy and happiness.
Hail the Dien Bien soldiers
The heroic fighters
With hearts of iron and fire
Fifty-six days and nights, digging mountains, sleeping in trenches, enduring the rain, eating rice balls
Blood mixed with mud
Bravery unyielding
Will unbroken!
Comrades who laid down their bodies as gunrests
Heads covered by iron shields
Crawling through barbed-wire mountains
The storm rages, comrades wedge themselves to save the artillery
Shattered bodies, eyes closed, still embracing their guns.
Hands that carved mountains, rolled bombs
Determined to clear the road for our vehicles to reach the battlefield.
And those sisters and brothers, day and night at the frontlines
In layers of clouds, strong winds, and heavy rain
Pha Đin slopes, sister carries, brother guides
Lũng Lô pass, brother calls, sister sings
Despite bombs and shells, shattered bones and flesh
Unwavering hearts, never regretting their youth.
To those who fell on the battlefield!
Your blood, our blood, will not be in vain:
It will make the fields of Vietnam green again
Mường Thanh, Hồng Cúm, Him Lam
Plum flowers will bloom white, the orange orchards will turn gold.
Their forces must surrender, must perish,
This battle will cleanse Dien Bien!
The enemy goes mad
They crawl into the earth
They flee to the sky?
The sky is not theirs
Our bullets weave a net of steel!
The earth is not theirs
Our steel belt tightens!
Our land, our sky, day and night
The mountains, hills, and rivers belong to us!
They have only one way out:
Either to the grave, or as prisoners.
Put down your weapons, trembling with fear
Hear our cannons roaring!
Hear this midday, on May 7
Above, the sky bursts with fiery wrath!
Look: Four sides, trenches collapse
Generals flee, waving white flags
Look: We raise the red and gold flag
Bright as the skies, Dien Bien stands victorious!
Hail the Dien Bien soldiers!
The echoes of cheers reach the mountains and rivers
Tonight, surely reaching Hồ Chí Minh
Uncle is bent over the map
Surely hearing the soldiers' cheers...
Since crossing the mountains and passes
We've walked, and Uncle has watched us every day
The news tonight, with joy and pride
Surely Uncle will be pleased, waiting for us.
Comrade Phạm Văn Đồng
Over there, surely tonight you won't sleep
The news is here, Dien Bien Phu is completed.
Tomorrow, the battle continues
Looking down at the Bidon and Smit forces
You will say: “Colonialism, fascism
Are finished!
Our country
Wants independence, peace to return
We don't want bombs and fires to fall on our children
Our land and your lands.
If you still thirst for bloodshed
In Vietnam, remember this
Bamboo has become a spear, rivers are rivers of fire.
And the victory of Dien Bien
Is just the first lesson!”
Tố Hữu
5-1954
