Cây hoa giấy là loại cây dây leo dạng gỗ, cây bụi hay cây thân gỗ có gai. Các loài dây leo thường mọc cao từ 1 - 12m, bò trên các loài cây khác bằng các gai có móc. Cây hoa giấy thích hợp với vùng khí hậu nóng ẩm, có nhiều ánh sáng và lượng mưa dồi dào quanh năm, loại cây này cũng rất dễ rụng lá nếu sống trong môi trường có mùa khô.
