If you have ever visited the Suoi Giang commune in Van Chan district, Yen Bai province, you cannot help but be amazed by the vast, towering ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees, with trunks covered in a white mossy coating, twisting and turning in all directions. To harvest them, one must climb the trees. The Shan Tuyet tea area in Suoi Giang spans over 393 hectares, with 293 hectares of naturally growing trees. The trees are found in the villages of Giang Cao, Giang B, Pang Cang, Tap Lang I, Tap Lang II, and Suoi Lop. There are over 40,000 trees, each between 100 and 300 years old. These trees are so large that they can be embraced by several people, with their wide canopy covering about 20 square meters, and their leaves are dark green. The number of ancient trees is so abundant that K. M. Djemmukhatze, a scholar from the A-Ba-Cu Biochemical Institute of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, upon visiting Suoi Giang in the 1960s, remarked, 'I have traveled to 120 countries with tea, but I have never seen such ancient tea trees anywhere else. Is this the origin of the tea plant? The tea here is so unique that it contains all 18 superior tastes of tea from around the world' (as written in the Suoi Giang commune's guestbook).
Thanks to the cool mountain climate and frequent mist, the tea buds are large, covered with a soft down-like fur, white as snow. Shan Tuyet tea is a naturally growing plant found in high mountain regions, nurtured by the essence of the earth and sky, resulting in large buds and leaves that are dark green, with a thin white down on top of the leaves, resembling snow. This is why it is called Shan Tuyet (tea covered with snow on high mountains).
