1. Adjust the Brightness of Your Computer Screen
For office workers or those who frequently use computers, it's important to adjust your screen and the positioning of your device to avoid putting strain on your eyes and causing them to overcompensate. Position the screen at eye level or slightly below, but not too low, and adjust the brightness to a comfortable level.
Additionally, staring at a computer screen reduces the number of times you blink per minute. To alleviate this, take regular breaks while working at the computer, and blink during these intervals. Avoid looking at the screen during break times. Adjust both the screen and its brightness to a comfortable level. Blinking helps improve tear flow, moistening your eyes and reducing fatigue. After an hour of computer use, it’s advisable to take a 10-minute break to let your eyes relax.

2. Eat Omega-3 Rich Foods
Your eyes naturally produce tears to create a thin film that protects them. Dry eyes occur when the tear film is damaged due to reduced tear production or excessive tear evaporation (some patients may experience constant tearing yet still have dry eyes due to rapid evaporation), leading to discomfort and surface damage to the cornea.
Omega-3 fatty acids have numerous health benefits. The molecules in Omega-3 help form the components of cell membranes, playing a vital role in reducing inflammation and promoting the production of natural oils in the eye glands. A diet lacking omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to dry eyes. Therefore, it’s recommended to consume more omega-3-rich foods such as fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts to alleviate dry eye symptoms.

3. Eat a Few Grapes
According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, individuals suffering from dry eye symptoms saw significant improvement after consuming grapes for a week. A diet rich in grapes can help moisturize the eyes and may also protect the retina from degeneration, while providing excellent overall eye care benefits.
Moreover, grapes are packed with antioxidants and polyphenolic compounds that are beneficial for your eyes. These nutrients help protect your eyes from the harmful effects of free radicals (oxidants). Therefore, adding grapes to your diet can be an excellent way to support eye health.

4. Try Using Castor Oil
Castor oil is highly effective for treating dry eyes as it can prevent the evaporation of tears. Simply apply the oil to the dry areas around your eyes, and you'll experience immediate relief. Castor oil also helps reduce the burning, redness, and swelling caused by dry eyes. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, castor oil can also be used to treat eye infections and prevent bacteria from entering the eyes.
If you want to use castor oil for eye care, follow these steps:
- While lying down before bed, place 1-3 drops of castor oil in each eye.
- Close your eyes and gently massage the oil for a few minutes.
- Avoid wearing contact lenses for at least 12 hours after applying castor oil.
- Repeat every night before bed for one week.

5. Limit the Use of Contact Lenses
Contact lenses are often considered a foreign object to the eyes, and whether to a small or large extent, they disrupt the natural biological properties of the eyeball and can cause complications. However, the issues caused by wearing contact lenses are typically minor, treatable, and generally do not result in permanent damage.
Contact lenses can make your eyes dry and more susceptible to damage. Therefore, try to limit their use. If your work requires you to wear them, be sure to remove them as soon as you get home.

6. Use Artificial Tears
For mild dry eyes, you can use over-the-counter artificial tears. A doctor can guide you on how often to use them. You can apply eye drops whenever needed, even as often as every hour, gradually reducing the frequency. If you use eye drops regularly, preservative-free drops are the best option to avoid allergic reactions or irritation from preservatives. Ointments are also an option to ensure the eyes remain lubricated, though they can cause temporary blurring, so it’s best to use them before bed.
Artificial tears can provide relief from dry eyes, but be aware that drops with preservatives can cause irritation if used too frequently. It’s recommended to use them up to four times a day, and any remaining bottle should be discarded after use. Additionally, eye ointments provide longer-lasting lubrication for dry eyes, but they may blur your vision, so they should be used mainly before sleep.

8. Apply a warm compress to your eyes
Experts suggest that applying warmth to the eyelids can help soften and clear blocked glands in the tear system. Tears are primarily made up of oils, water, and mucus in roughly equal amounts. When your eyes are irritated and inflamed, the oil production in the eyelid glands decreases, leading to dry eyes. A simple way to alleviate dry eyes is to apply a warm compress to the eyelids for several minutes. The moisture from the warm cloth helps loosen the blocked oils in the glands, easing discomfort.
You can follow these easy steps:
- Step 1: Soak a face towel in warm water, then wring it out to a damp but not dripping consistency.
- Step 2: Place the towel on your eyes for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Step 3: Rinse your eyes with warm water.
This procedure should be repeated 2-3 times a day until the dry eye condition improves.

9. Drink plenty of water
Drinking enough water is a crucial factor in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and ensuring overall well-being. Keeping your body hydrated helps all its systems function properly, including your eyes. Water ensures that your eyes stay moisturized, promoting adequate tear production and preventing dry eyes.
You should aim to drink at least 8 cups of water each day. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink, as that could mean you're already dehydrated. If necessary, carry a water bottle with you so you can hydrate whenever needed.
