The poet composed it in 1948 in Phù Lưu Chanh after leaving the Tây Tiến unit for another assignment. Established in 1947, the Tây Tiến military unit collaborated with the Lao forces to protect the Việt - Lao border and weaken French forces in Upper Laos and the northwest of Vietnam. The unit's operations were widespread, with most of the soldiers being young men from Hanoi, including many students, among them Quang Dũng. They lived and fought in harsh conditions, enduring malaria and scarcity, yet remained optimistic and courageous. After over a year, the Tây Tiến unit returned to Hoà Bình to form the 52nd Regiment. Initially, the poet titled the work "Nhớ Tây Tiến" (Remembering Tây Tiến), but later changed it to "Tây Tiến".
The poem was born from Quang Dũng's memories and nostalgia for his old military unit. As such, it reflects deep and heartfelt longing. The poem is divided into four parts. The first part expresses the hardships of the Tây Tiến soldiers and the wild, imposing nature of Tây Bắc. Although we've never been there, literature allows us to grasp, even if briefly, the beauty of these places. When referring to Tây Bắc, literature not only takes us to this land once but over and over again. We can admire the majestic scenery of the Tây Bắc mountains through the "Việt Bắc" poem by Tố Hữu, and once again, through the verses of Quang Dũng, the natural beauty of the Tây Bắc region is vividly brought to life in this excerpt from his poem:
"Farewell Sông Mã, Tây Tiến,
My heart drifts back to the mountains, feeling the emptiness,
Sài Khao veiled in mist, the weary soldiers pass,
Mường Lát, flowers bloom in the night’s haze,
The hill slopes twist and stretch endlessly,
