1. Touch ID Fingerprint Sensor
- Apple has equipped the second-generation Touch ID sensor on the 2016 Macbook Pro, allowing users to unlock the device with a single touch.
- In addition, Touch ID enhances user security during online transactions.
- On previous Macbook models, Touch ID was placed in the power button position.
2. Removal of the Traditional MagSafe Port, Replaced with USB-C
This is perhaps the most concerning change for Macbook fans, as it has been a trend since the release of The New Macbook. Apple has completely removed the traditional MagSafe charging port and replaced it entirely with USB-C ports.
3. Replacement of Standard USB Ports with 4 Thunderbolt 3 Ports
- This is another point of concern for the 2016 Macbook Pro, as traditional USB ports are still widely used.
- Apple has removed all standard USB ports, replacing them with 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports. It is highly likely that Apple will offer a conversion adapter alongside the device.
4. Removal of the SD Card Slot
- Another feature that Apple has removed is the traditional SD card slot.
- It’s unclear how Apple plans to replace this functionality. Many Apple enthusiasts believe this move enhances the aesthetics of the new Macbook.
5. 6th Generation Intel Skylake Processor
- The 2016 Macbook Pro comes in 3 versions: a 15-inch and 13-inch with Touchbar, and a 13-inch model without Touchbar. All are powered by the 6th generation Intel Skylake processor.
- The latest Intel processor currently available is the Kaby Lake (7th generation).
- You can refer to the configurations of the three new Macbook Pro models.
6. Apple Logo on the Back No Longer Glows
Another change similar to The New Macbook: the Apple logo on the back no longer lights up, as seen on previous Macbook models. Instead, it is now etched directly onto the back cover of the device.
7. Touchpad Twice the Size of Previous Macbook Pro Models
The Touchpad on the 2016 Macbook Pro has been redesigned to be twice the size of the previous models. Overall, this design offers a more balanced aesthetic appeal.
8. Brighter Screen with Improved Contrast
Regarding the display, Apple claims that the new Macbook Pro has the same slim profile as the 12-inch Macbook, with a 67% increase in brightness, a 67% higher contrast ratio, and 25% more colors compared to the previous version.
9. Faster SSD and Better Performance
- The configuration of the 2016 Macbook Pro is undoubtedly more powerful than previous versions. The 15-inch model comes equipped with an Intel Core i7 2133MHz processor, paired with AMD’s Polaris GPU featuring 4GB of VRAM, offering speeds 2-3 times faster than older versions.
- The new SSD delivers super-fast speeds of up to 3.1GB/s, with a capacity of up to 2TB.
- In total, Apple claims that the 15-inch Macbook Pro offers 60% better gaming performance, 130% better 3D graphics, and a 50% improvement in video editing.
10. Listed Price is for the Standard Version, with Optional Max Upgrades
- Apple has announced the standard prices for the three versions: $1,499 for the 13-inch model without Touchbar, $1,799 - $1,999 for the 13-inch version with Touchbar, and $2,399 - $2,799 for the 15-inch model with Touchbar.
- These prices are for the standard versions, but Apple allows users to upgrade to max options including an Intel Core i7, 4 x 2.9 GHz, 2TB SSD, and a Radeon Pro 460 4GB graphics card. The price for the maxed-out configuration goes up to $4,299.
11. Completely New Design
- Previously, when thinking of a Macbook Pro, we often envisioned a bulky and heavy laptop, especially the 15-inch version, which was quite inconvenient.
- With the 2016 version, Apple has redesigned and optimized the size and weight of the Macbook Pro: thinner, lighter, and in line with the company's current design trends. The new Macbook Pro now weighs only 1.83 kg, compared to 2.6 kg of the older versions.
- The Macbook Pro now follows the new design language of The New Macbook 12-inch.
12. OLED Touchbar Display with Multi-Touch Functionality
- Finally, the rumors about the OLED display strip above the keyboard have come true. Apple has replaced the traditional F1-F12 function keys with this OLED strip, which can display function options or buttons.
- This multi-touch OLED bar, named the Touchbar, can show control buttons or context-sensitive functions depending on the app you're using on the main screen.
- The OLED strip is highly flexible for photo editing, and it also offers predictive text features similar to the iOS keyboard.
13. New 'Butterfly' Keyboard Mechanism
- Apple has incorporated the latest 'butterfly' keyboard mechanism, previously used in The New Macbook models from 2015 and 2016.
- The keyboard on the 2016 Macbook Pro is the second-generation version, offering better responsiveness than The New Macbook. The key thickness is minimized, providing a feel that glides over the key rather than the tactile feel of a traditional key.
- By using the 'butterfly' mechanism, Apple has further slimmed down the 2016 Macbook Pro design.
