The issue of road safety is perhaps one of the most pressing concerns today, especially as modern life advances and the number of vehicle users continues to rise, leading to an alarming increase in traffic accidents. This calls for urgent actions and measures to address the situation.
First, to better understand this issue, we must define what road safety means. It refers to unexpected events that occur beyond human control when road users, who are actively participating in traffic, violate traffic safety rules or encounter situations they are unable to prevent, resulting in damage to people and property.
In Vietnam, an average of tens of thousands of traffic accidents are recorded annually, with thousands of lives lost. This alarming statistic reflects the state of traffic safety in the country. Although in the past we faced the horrors of war and terrorism, today, with peace restored, traffic accidents have emerged as a silent war, lurking around us and threatening our lives at any moment. The root cause of these frequent accidents lies in the poor awareness of road users. Statistics show that common causes include alcohol, drugs, speeding, ignoring traffic signals, not wearing helmets, overloading, and lane violations. During rush hours, traffic congestion creates chaos, and even in off-peak hours, reckless speeding and overtaking are prevalent, particularly among young people. A recent case in Tien Giang province involved a group of teenagers racing on the highway, resulting in the death of one after crashing into a power pole. It is tragic to see a generation risk their lives for the sake of showing off. Additionally, the poor quality of road infrastructure contributes to the problem, despite repeated reports highlighting the issue, no effective solutions have been implemented. Furthermore, the management of traffic safety remains inadequate, with the licensing and testing of drivers not always being thorough, allowing many unqualified drivers on the road, which increases the risk of accidents.
Alongside these causes, the consequences are devastating. They result in immense personal losses, with families torn apart as mothers lose children, or children lose parents. Survivors often suffer long-term injuries. The disorder caused by traffic accidents, such as social unrest and frequent traffic jams, only adds to the chaos and difficulty of managing the situation. So, what measures can we take to stop this problem? First, improving awareness among road users is crucial. If everyone’s awareness increases, we will no longer witness heartbreaking scenes of victims lying in pools of blood or families grieving over lost loved ones. We must make a conscious effort to raise our own awareness, and if possible, educate others about the importance of following traffic regulations, for our safety and the safety of others. Specifically, obeying traffic lights, driving within speed limits, and refraining from using alcohol or drugs while driving are essential to creating a safe and civilized society. It is also important to educate children about road safety from a young age, as this will instill good habits for the future. Secondly, stronger enforcement of laws is necessary, not only to detect and prevent violations but also to serve as a deterrent, setting a positive example and fostering correct behavior among the public. Special attention must be given to addressing corrupt practices among law enforcement officers, such as bribery or altering violations. Thirdly, improving road infrastructure and ensuring that all roads are built to a high standard will facilitate safer travel. When these measures are effectively implemented, citizens will feel more confident on the road, reducing the fear of accidents. Therefore, it is crucial for everyone to take responsibility and contribute to reducing traffic accidents.
As a student, I believe my responsibility is to strictly adhere to traffic laws, wear a helmet, and set a good example. Only by doing this can I effectively spread awareness about the importance of road safety and ensure that both my safety and the safety of others are guaranteed.
IllustrationIn today's rapidly advancing society, along with human development and economic growth, transportation has also seen significant progress, making movement easier and more convenient than ever before. However, with the widespread availability of modern transportation, traffic congestion on the streets has become increasingly common, creating a higher risk of accidents. Therefore, improving traffic awareness is a crucial standard for civilized individuals in this modern era, contributing to the progress and development of cities and nations.
Traffic awareness refers to following the regulations governing road, waterway, maritime, and aviation laws. It involves being responsible for one’s own safety as well as the safety of others. Traffic refers to the movement of people and vehicles in public spaces, including both motorized vehicles and pedestrians. Violating traffic safety laws occurs when individuals fail to comply with legal provisions, leading to harmful consequences. In Vietnam, there are still significant challenges in the transportation system, mainly evident in two key issues. First, traffic jams are common in large cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, especially during rush hours when congestion worsens, with the sound of car horns echoing for hours as people hurry to reach their destinations, often disregarding the chaos, squeezing, and cutting through lanes. This issue is not limited to daytime but occurs even at night. The increasing number of vehicles, currently exceeding 45 million, is a major contributor to these accidents. Despite the expansion of roads and the construction of tunnels, traffic congestion persists, and it is evident that the infrastructure is still insufficient to meet public demand.
Previously, accidents were rare as vehicles like motorcycles and cars were not widespread, and most people used bicycles. Today, the number of vehicles is staggering, and every two individuals are likely to have one vehicle. Although roads, bridges, and tunnels have expanded, they still cannot accommodate the traffic flow. The chaos and overcrowding on roads have disrupted the once-organized community structure in Vietnam. When hearing about the tragic accidents, what emotions arise? Do you feel a chill down your spine upon reading the statistics such as 4,059 accidents resulting in 2,138 deaths in 2020 alone? Around 1.75 million people die globally each year, and 50 million are injured due to traffic accidents. In Vietnam, despite efforts to reduce accidents, more than 8,000 people still die annually, averaging around 30 deaths per day, with 70,000 people suffering lifelong injuries.
The rapid increase in the number of motor vehicles has led to constant violations and accidents on the road. The public has become increasingly concerned about these issues. With the rising number of accidents, people now fear stepping out of their homes, constantly worried that a fatal accident could happen at any moment. So what are the causes? First, individual responsibility and mental health of drivers, who fail to follow the rules. Speeding, running red lights, improper lane usage, neglecting to check before opening a car door, not wearing helmets, and overloading vehicles—all of these actions jeopardize lives. Many drivers recklessly weave in and out of traffic, while others fail to understand the technical specifications of their vehicles and lack the necessary skills to drive safely.
Another critical issue is distracted driving caused by alcohol, drugs, and other substances that impair judgment, visibility, and quick reaction to sudden hazards. Moreover, some people obtain fake driver's licenses, especially among women, compromising their safety. The poor quality of roads, with contractors cutting corners to save money, contributes to road hazards like potholes, poor infrastructure, and aging roads. The rapid increase in the number of vehicles and pedestrians on already congested roads exacerbates the problem.
Additionally, weak enforcement of traffic regulations and insufficient monitoring contribute to these issues. When participating in traffic, have we ever thought about the safety of those around us, or are we only concerned with getting ahead? However, “a minute’s speed can cost a lifetime.” Have we reflected on the threat to our safety, caused by ourselves or by others? Every day, traffic accidents claim lives and cause immense pain to families. The loss of human lives is irreplaceable, and the scars of accidents remain in the memories of those affected.
Behind the deaths of victims are grieving families and friends. The consequences of accidents affect not only the immediate victims but also their loved ones who suffer financially and emotionally. Children lose their parents and face hardships that may lead to poverty, further hindering the country’s economic development. The fear and anxiety spread among the community, tarnishing the image of a nation once known for its humanistic values.
Traffic accidents leave devastating consequences, not only in terms of lives but also in property damage. The toll is too high, and it is essential for everyone to fully recognize the disastrous effects of these accidents on national progress. Congestion also contributes to environmental pollution, causing respiratory issues and wasting energy. Young people, who often break traffic rules to assert themselves, and others who engage in reckless behaviors, put innocent lives at risk. For the sake of our own safety and society’s future, we must seriously question why traffic violations, accidents, and congestion persist at such alarming rates. The answer lies in acknowledging the responsibility of individuals, organizations, and government authorities.
We must enhance traffic awareness through rigorous policies, public education, and improved infrastructure. By strengthening enforcement and investing in better roads and vehicles, we can reduce accidents. Traffic accidents in Vietnam have decreased in recent years, but more action is needed to ensure a safer future for all. Annually, Vietnam and the world hold memorial events for traffic accident victims to raise awareness of the importance of road safety. These events remind us to cherish the lives of others and our own, emphasizing the need to comply with traffic laws and act responsibly. Let’s all contribute to road safety for the benefit of ourselves, our families, and society as a whole. Every life is precious, and we must treat it with respect and care.

Our country is increasingly developing along the path of industrialization and modernization. As people's material needs and transportation demands continue to rise, the traffic situation has become more complex. Traffic safety is a pressing issue and the top concern for society as a whole. Traffic accidents are candidly recognized as "disasters" because of the massive consequences they have on the economy and society, especially the irreversible emotional damage. Preventing and addressing traffic accidents is considered a crucial task at the national level by the Party, the State, and the people.
Traffic safety refers to behaviors that ensure the lives of those involved in transportation and maintain order and safety on the streets. It involves the entire population adhering strictly to road safety laws, whether for roads, railways, waterways, or airways, to protect their own lives and the safety of others on the road. For instance, road users must wear helmets while riding motorcycles, buckle up when in cars, stop at red lights, and park properly in designated areas.
Traffic safety means strictly following traffic laws when on the road. It ensures the safety of oneself and others around. However, the current situation of traffic safety is becoming increasingly alarming, posing a serious threat to society and drawing considerable attention. At a national online conference reviewing the work for the first quarter of 2021, Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, reported that while traffic order had improved, serious traffic accidents still occurred, resulting in many fatalities. According to the Ministry of Transport's report, the country saw an increase of about 500,000 cars annually, exacerbating traffic congestion. It is estimated that in the next 5 to 7 years, the congestion problem will worsen unless significant measures are taken now. In the first quarter of 2021, there were 3,206 traffic accidents nationwide, resulting in 1,672 deaths and 2,386 injuries. Compared to the same period in 2020, the number of accidents decreased by 263 cases (a 7.58% decrease), injuries decreased by 183 people, but deaths increased by 33 (a 2.1% rise). In particular, 30 provinces and cities saw a decrease in fatalities, while 30 provinces saw an increase, with 16 having a rise of over 30%. Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình noted that the first quarter of 2021 coincided with the Lunar New Year and the New Year's holiday, as well as the period when the country was battling the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to less pressure on traffic. Nonetheless, road accidents still accounted for the highest percentage of fatalities.
In traffic participation, people's awareness is still poor. Up to 50% of drivers fail to use turn signals when changing lanes, 72% don’t wear helmets, and running red lights remains common, causing tragic accidents. Worse still, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a frequent problem.
Today, traffic accidents happen daily, causing enormous losses in property and human lives. The current state of traffic in our country is alarming, a complex issue that society is actively seeking effective solutions for. Every day, more and more accidents happen, and countless lives are lost, with traffic accidents being the leading cause of death in the country.
The root causes of this alarming situation include poor road awareness, lack of knowledge about laws and safety regulations, substance abuse such as drugs and alcohol while driving, speeding, and reckless driving. Additionally, narrow roads, deteriorating infrastructure, and an increasing number of vehicles on the roads contribute to the rising number of accidents. The irresponsible behavior and lack of awareness of a significant portion of traffic participants, especially in rural and urban areas, is a key factor. According to reports, the primary cause of fatal traffic accidents, especially those resulting in death, is the use of alcohol, drugs, and other stimulants. Many people find themselves in tragic situations due to excessive drinking at celebrations, weddings, or other social gatherings, then driving under the influence, either causing or becoming victims of accidents. This issue is particularly prevalent during major public holidays like the Hung Kings Festival on March 10, Victory Day on April 30, and National Day on September 2, when the number of accidents and fatalities spikes.
Vietnamese traffic culture is seen as shameful compared to other countries. Whether in major cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, one can witness frequent violations of traffic laws, which pose significant risks of accidents. These include speeding, ignoring traffic signals, not wearing helmets, encroaching on lanes, overloaded vehicles, and driving in the wrong direction. During rush hours, many vehicles try to squeeze through lanes to get home faster, disregarding traffic regulations. At night, with fewer police on duty, some young people engage in illegal street racing, creating a dangerous environment. A portion of youth today, with reckless attitudes and a love for speed, ignore the value of life and are more focused on showing off than understanding the consequences of their actions. This behavior is partly due to poor family and school guidance, leading to distorted views on traffic safety.
Traffic accidents are among the most devastating disasters that threaten human lives and health. These accidents result in significant emotional and financial damage. Families with accident victims face the agony of both physical and emotional pain. Those severely injured often require extensive financial resources to save their lives, burdening families with additional economic strain. Wealthy families can afford treatment, but poor families may end up in debt. Many accident victims may suffer lifelong disabilities, leaving their families to carry the financial and emotional burden. In some cases, the main breadwinner of a family may be permanently incapacitated, leaving the family in a dire situation.
Thus, the consequences of traffic accidents extend beyond physical and emotional pain. They also cause financial instability and hardship, especially when the primary wage earner is injured or killed. This leads to a cycle of poverty and suffering, which hinders personal and societal development. Reports indicate that the majority of traffic accident victims are young people, the primary providers in their families, who make up 70% of traffic-related deaths. The lack of road safety severely impacts the perception of Vietnam's development, affecting the country's image in the eyes of the international community. If the situation doesn't improve, foreign investment may decrease, slowing economic growth and international trade.
To address the issue of traffic accidents and ensure safety on the roads, it is essential for each of us to recognize the importance of adhering to traffic regulations. We must be responsible, act with awareness, and protect ourselves and others on the road. Drivers need to be well-informed and disciplined, resisting temptations to drink and drive or engage in other reckless behaviors during social gatherings. Families and schools must play a key role in instilling good traffic habits, emphasizing the serious consequences of neglecting road safety.
The government should also invest in improving infrastructure and enforcing stricter penalties for traffic violations. Efforts to raise awareness and educate the public about traffic laws must be intensified, ensuring clear, simple messages that everyone can understand and follow. Public campaigns should create widespread support and trust, encouraging a nationwide effort to improve traffic safety.
Training and education for all road users are crucial. Drivers must receive comprehensive and practical traffic education, ensuring they can navigate the roads safely. Similarly, law enforcement and traffic personnel need continuous professional development to enhance their ability to maintain order and respond to traffic situations appropriately.
The younger generation is the future of our nation, and it is vital for them to follow traffic regulations strictly. We must all commit to upholding these rules and spread this mindset to everyone around us. By participating in road safety, we not only protect our own lives but also contribute to the safety of those around us. Anyone who has broken the rules should reflect on their actions and correct their mistakes, helping to maintain social order.
In conclusion, traffic safety is a pressing issue that the Party and the State of Vietnam are highly concerned about because of its significant impact on the country's development. By adopting the slogan "Safety is your friend, accidents are your enemy," we can work towards a safer and more prosperous society without traffic accidents. Every citizen must be aware of their responsibility and abide by traffic laws to help build a civilized, modern, and progressive society.

Society is always burdened with numerous pressing issues that attract widespread public attention. One such issue is traffic safety and the condition of road safety across our nation.
As we all know, our country is still developing, and the infrastructure, including roads, is of substandard quality in many areas. Even urban roads remain uneven, posing serious risks to road safety. Additionally, a large number of citizens lack awareness when it comes to traffic safety: driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances, ignoring traffic laws, weaving between lanes, driving without the legal age, and other dangerous behaviors often lead to accidents, as we are all too familiar with.
The root cause of this issue lies in the lack of traffic awareness among the people, their insufficient understanding, and their failure to comply with traffic laws. Poor infrastructure, such as poorly maintained roads and unsafe vehicles, is another significant factor contributing to the rise in accidents. Traffic accidents result in significant loss of life and property, leaving permanent injuries for individuals and causing immense consequences for the community. Furthermore, these accidents bring pain, loss, and grief to the families involved.
The most effective solution is for each individual to thoroughly understand traffic laws and strictly adhere to them: avoiding reckless driving, never driving without a license, stopping at red lights, driving in the correct lanes, and following proper parking rules. When making turns or stopping, drivers should signal clearly and ensure they have a clear view. Speed should be reduced, especially at intersections, and alcohol consumption should be avoided before driving. Awareness of traffic safety is a personal responsibility and the key to safe driving. Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable improvement in the traffic awareness of the Vietnamese public. Though traffic accidents have decreased, the rate is still high, and heartbreaking incidents continue to occur, often due to the poor awareness of drivers. Raising awareness about road safety is a mark of a civilized society and a modern nation. However, improving traffic awareness is of paramount importance. It reflects a well-educated populace, responsible citizens who value human life and have the knowledge to act wisely. When traffic is safe, the image of individuals, cities, and the nation is peaceful and beautiful in the eyes of the international community.
To achieve a more civilized society, it is essential that we not only raise individual awareness but also actively promote traffic laws and the grave consequences of failing to follow them to others. Each individual’s commitment to traffic safety can significantly reduce the damage caused by accidents and contribute to a more sophisticated, well-ordered society.
