1. A Journey Through the Memories
While going through old papers today, I stumbled upon a letter from my best friend sent over a decade ago. Holding the letter in my hands, all the cherished memories came rushing back... I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia.
Fourteen years have passed, and the passage of time has left its mark on the paper, but our friendship remains just as strong as it was back then. Despite life's challenges, despite being separated by the North and South... we still check in, encourage, and talk to each other. The only difference is that we no longer communicate through handwritten letters.
I remember those days vividly. When I received a letter from you, it was the happiest moment. I'd read it over and over again, laughing and crying on my own. Laughing and rejoicing in your happiness and your family's stability. Crying from your words of longing, missing friends, and the deep affection for your hometown. To save you the wait, I would immediately start writing a reply, pouring all my emotions and thoughts into every word, every line. Once done, I'd ride my bicycle all the way to the post office in Nam Dinh City to send the letter, and then cycle back, tired but filled with joy. After sending it, I would wait eagerly for your response, in anticipation and excitement.
I’ve lost count of how many handwritten letters I’ve written over the years. But I remember writing so many... to friends, to soldiers stationed on the islands, to loved ones far away. It was always such a joy and an adventure writing to the soldiers stationed on the islands, like those on Truong Sa, Bach Long Vi, Co To, and Da Lon islands. They were all so funny, kind, and easy to get along with. Was it the spirit of the soldiers or the harsh conditions they faced, both physically and mentally, that made them cherish every letter from the mainland? Every letter from the island felt like having the sea close by. I’ve always admired the soldiers on the islands and could feel the warmth and love of the sea in their words. They’d share stories of sails, coral reefs, lighthouses, and the seagulls gliding gracefully over the waves. The letters were full of encouragement, admiration, affection, and heartfelt words from a girl on the mainland, sending love to the far-off soldiers. These words gave them strength and conviction, helping them stay strong as they guarded our nation's seas and skies. Even though we’d never met in person or shared any photos, our conversations through letters brought us so much closer, in a way that was both warm and deeply touching. Everything about it was precious, cherished, and worthy of admiration.
I am grateful for life and for the friends who have given me a place to remember, to love, and to reminisce. In this fast-paced 4.0 era, I still have this special memory... how I cherish the past.

2. Reconnecting with Old Friends and New Stories
Sometimes, I find myself reminiscing about the old days, the final years of my school life. Perhaps it was the age when I was starting to grow into adulthood, or maybe it was the time when a few special girls made my heart flutter and kept me awake at night. Or perhaps it was just the dreams and ambitions of that time. Looking back now, I realize how naïve, awkward, and impulsive I was, and I can't help but feel a little regretful. But now, all that's left are the sweet memories of those school days.
It had been a long time since I last visited the city where so many of my friends live. I was cautious about meeting up, so I only called one friend, and he invited me over. Before I could congratulate him on his beautiful home and stable life, a few unfamiliar faces approached me. “You’re… here? It’s so great to see you again!” Hearing the words “see you again” made me search my memory for who they were, but I couldn’t remember. Well, I’ll just blame it on getting older! My host friend cleared the confusion: “We were in the same class, but not the same group. We probably never met before. This class was years ago...” Ah, so we were all classmates after all. Then, the conversations erupted like popcorn popping. Long-lost memories were pieced together, stories without beginning or end flowed. Old names were mentioned, bringing back the long-lost spirits of the past. Emotions were shared honestly, without calculation, without selfishness. And there I was, immersed in the familiar school atmosphere, using the casual “you-me” to address each other without any formalities. Then it dawned on me that, in those old days, everyone had a first love they could never forget. Now, even though each of us has a happy family, children, and grandchildren, there’s still a small corner in our hearts that holds the memory of that first love.
If we speak honestly and from the heart, I’m sure everyone would admit that they once secretly admired or even loved a school friend. I mentioned one such name, not to boast, but to reminisce. To remember, to imagine countless scenarios... and to regret! After all these years, that hand-holding moment still feels warm to this day! It seems we even kissed. That kiss still feels sweet on my lips whenever I think of it! If only time could rewind... But no! I wouldn't want such a wish now, because each of us has chosen a different path, whether willingly or by force. That path is now green with trees, adorned with vibrant flowers; no one would want to destroy it to build a new one! Let it rest peacefully with time. But no one can forget, especially when someone brings it up!
Old friends seldom talk about themselves or the present. Perhaps the present is already here. Having good health and sitting together to joke and laugh is enough of a blessing. But the greatest joy is the future—the things that have yet to happen—and that future is embodied in the growth of our children. We look to the future through their accomplishments and maturity. We are happy for their success. We are grateful for the health of our friends, even as time continues to stack years upon us. And we feel a bittersweet sadness for the old days. Suddenly, we realize that meeting again is a gift from the heavens, and we cherish every moment we have together. We remind each other to “let go” of all the trivial things—anger, jealousy—and find peace. It turns out that reconnecting with old friends makes life feel new again. Perhaps that’s why everyone is so eager for their class reunions these days!
Initially, only a few familiar faces from our old school organized a gathering to reminisce and have fun. Over time, more and more people joined, representing all grades, all schools... and now, reunions happen every year. If the goal was simply to honor our teachers or to “remember the old and meet the new,” then every reunion would be a celebration of old students. But due to different economic circumstances and social status, and the growing emotional distance between some, conflicts have arisen after each reunion. Some feel awkward when their friend arrives in a fancy car while they come by motorcycle. Others feel resentment when a once-close friend, now in a higher position, offers only a polite handshake. Some feel their heart race when they meet their old crush. If we don’t learn to let go, then each reunion, though joyful, can feel heavier than the last.
I rambled on when meeting some familiar and unfamiliar faces in a city that felt both familiar and strange. I say this to show that familiarity and strangeness depend on oneself. Just like us—we old friends—have many new stories to share! And I suddenly realized there’s no such thing as “old friends” or “new friends,” there’s only “friends.” I value all my friends for that reason!

3. My Friend
Time will eventually fade the memories of you and me. Yet, I know that one day, whether it's you or I, we will remember that there were friends who deeply cared for you, who valued you, who traveled far for you, who stayed up late just to listen to your thoughts... I cherish every moment, every word, every memory with the people I call 'my friends'.
My friends are not just the ones who stand by during moments of joy, or the ones who show up when I'm in need. They are the ones who, whether near or far, have shared significant moments in life. We both understand that to keep this friendship strong, we must laugh together in times of happiness and support each other through life's challenges.
My dear friend, true friendship never involves distance or excuses like being too busy to meet, or too poor to share a cup of coffee. If we truly consider each other friends, no matter how busy life gets, we should always make time to support one another. Don't let pride or ego destroy the moments we could share in friendship.
Friend, we can always understand each other's busy lives. But when the busyness becomes an excuse to never talk or always reject meet-ups, it’s time to question whether the person truly values you as you do them. No one is so busy they can't send a simple message. A text might just be a few words, but it's filled with emotion. It only takes a second to maintain a friendship, which is far more valuable than spending hundreds on fleeting distractions with people who only use each other.
Friendship can weather almost anything and thrive in even the most barren soil, but it sometimes needs a little nurturing through letters, phone calls, or small, silly gifts to keep from withering.
Sometimes, life’s busyness makes us numb, but in moments of loneliness, we realize just how meaningful it is to have friends who truly understand our past, believe in our future, and accept us for who we are today. A true friend isn’t seen just with the eyes, but felt with the heart, through genuine care and without ulterior motives.
My friend, for a long time now, you have been like family to me. A bond of kinship that’s not blood, but warm, safe, and built on trust. Though we’re far apart, I’m always here to share both joys and sorrows with you. In moments of work troubles, I often wish I could call you, just to share a few words, knowing that while no one can solve the problem for me, your encouragement and care will help ease the weight. That’s the beauty of friendship—it doesn’t require daily meetings, fancy dinners, or walks around the school yard. Just thinking of each other and a quick check-in is enough to keep the bond warm.
My friend, we can say anything to each other—vent about life, laugh about gossip, and discuss all kinds of topics, no matter how trivial. With you, I am myself, without hesitation. No matter how long it's been, we can pick up where we left off, as if no time has passed at all.
Friend, remember that nothing in life is perfect, not even friendship. There will be times when we’re upset, when we disagree, or even argue about silly things. But after all is said and done, I know that true friendship endures. Maybe we’ll get mad, maybe we’ll say things we don’t mean, but we’ll always come back to peace, because these little disagreements help us understand and empathize with one another more.
Life is unpredictable. You may be happy with the one you love today, but tomorrow, that person may not be by your side. You might be at the top of your game now, but the world is always changing, and relationships can fade. But friendship remains. That’s the one thing that stays constant, because true friends can forgive, and they don’t let go.
Life is full of wonder, and somewhere, people are still offering words of care and sharing their lives. You and a pure friendship are things everyone hopes to have, whether you’re near or far, older or younger, right in front of me or just a memory. No matter who you are, you will always be my friend. Let’s treat each other well, share kindness, and make the most of this life together, my friend.
Let’s remain good friends so I can keep writing the story called 'My Friend'.

4. We Will Always Be Best Friends
Throughout life, you've crossed paths with hundreds, even thousands, of faces. Some have been guides, showing you the way. Some have been lovers, and some have stayed by your side, offering trust and companionship. But there are those who, without question, stand by you, sharing in both the joys and the sorrows of life. These are the people we call our best friends.
Friendship is a bond as deep and meaningful as family. In this world, no one can live in complete solitude forever. All the emotions, the ups and downs, the laughter and tears, will always need someone to share them with. We can’t walk this life alone, we all need friends. A friend is the one who checks in on you when you're sick. The shoulder you lean on when you're down. The smile that brightens your day after a tiring one. The hug that comforts you when you're feeling lonely. Or sometimes, it’s that special place in your heart that you hold just for them. A best friend is exactly that person.
They’re the ones who forgive your silly mistakes. They’re the ones who might scold you in one breath but feel your pain even more deeply in the next. They’re the ones who’ll always embrace you when you're feeling small. Sometimes, they give you pure affection that warms your heart. After everything, your best friend is the one who stays by your side when the world around you gives up.
Time moves on and everything changes. We are no longer the young, carefree kids we once were. Everyone is busy with the rush of life. Each of us carries our own burdens. But amidst all the noise and chaos, as long as we can still think of each other when we need to share, that is enough. Even if our lives take different paths. Even if we form new relationships along the way. Even if we no longer share every little thing. I hope that when we meet, we can still laugh with all our hearts. That’s enough for me.
Having a best friend in life is a rare and precious gift. A friendship that grows stronger with age might be one of the most beautiful things we could hope for. Having someone to share the vibrant moments of youth with and to face life’s most precious moments together is truly special. So let’s grow old together, my friend. Let’s continue down the long road ahead. Let’s face challenges together, and let’s laugh and celebrate the surprises life has in store for us. Because in the end, we will always be best friends!

5. Best Friends
“Good wine is nothing without a true friend
Not that you can't buy it, but there's no need for that.
The poem's verses linger, yet no words come.
Who would I share them with, who would understand?
The bed is bare, indifferent to the night.
The guitar is played, but the music is lost in confusion.”
(Excerpt from the poem “Crying for Duong Khue” by poet Nguyen Khuyen)
Everyone knows about the deep friendship between two prominent scholars and poets in Vietnam, Nguyen Khuyen and Duong Khue. Nguyen Khuyen, heartbroken, wept for his dear friend. His poem “Crying for Duong Khue” expresses the pain and sorrow of losing a friend so suddenly, while reminiscing about the beautiful memories of a friendship that leaves one feeling alone. When there's no one to share with, everything seems meaningless. It's sad not to have a kindred spirit, someone who understands your thoughts. Each line of his poem is filled with tears, stirring emotions and evoking a deep sense of loss over a beautiful friendship.
A friend, in simple terms, is someone we know. However, not everyone we know qualifies as a true friend. When someone is truly considered a friend, it means there's a deep bond, a level of closeness where the person shares our feelings, understands us, and offers their support. A true friend is one who listens when we are sad, stays by us in difficult times, and helps us through our challenges. Only a true friend can be a companion in life. They are someone we love, care for, and share both joys and sorrows with. A true friend is someone who makes us comfortable even in silence. Beyond moments of conversation, true friendship is found when words aren't needed, yet both understand each other completely. Even if years pass without contact, the connection remains, and when reunited, it feels like family. A true friend helps us avoid mistakes and guides us to correct them. They support and stand by us, offering strength and confidence. They follow us through life’s ups and downs, always there, not only in moments of success but also in times of failure, when others may have left us behind. In the end, after all the ups and downs, we realize that though we may have many acquaintances, true friends are rare.
Finding a true friend isn't easy. Often, true friends are those who have shared a long history together, exchanging happiness and sorrow. A bond that seems unbreakable. But one day, due to misunderstanding or mistrust, things can fall apart. Just one moment of anger or doubt can lead to continuous misunderstandings. In friendship, trust is key. True friends must be able to forgive each other. Therefore, honesty and openness are essential in friendship. Life is filled with mistakes, but with genuine friendship, flaws and errors can be forgiven.
Friendship is gentle and refreshing like a fall breeze, making the yellow leaves dance. It is warm like the sun’s rays, illuminating every corner of the heart. Sometimes, it is as clear as a blue autumn sky, as peaceful as a calm river, but other times, it is dark and turbulent, like a city without lights or a stormy sea. Friendship is about mutual understanding, standing by each other in times of hardship, without selfishness or ulterior motives. Life is full of regrets, but it's important to cherish the present and treat our friends with sincerity. Let’s open our hearts to the love others offer us. As the saying goes, “Love is blind, but friendship helps us live better,” because a true friend is always there to face life's challenges with us.
When we find ourselves in difficult situations, when life seems meaningless, when everything around us feels dark, that’s when a true friend will stand by us, encouraging and guiding us towards the light at the end of the tunnel. Life isn’t always full of roses; sometimes we face losses, pain, and failures that seem insurmountable, and we may even contemplate giving up. That’s when the value of friendship becomes clear. Alongside family and love, genuine friendship is a strong foundation in life. A true friend is one who motivates and encourages us to rise, rejoices in our happiness, shares our sorrow, and always checks in when we are lonely. When dreams and hopes are crushed, a true friend is the one whose shoulder we lean on. Some people may not be family or even close friends, but when they learn of our struggles, they are the first to offer a listening ear and help in any way they can. They treat us as family, even when our loved ones may have abandoned us. Such friends are precious and deserve our deepest gratitude.
Everyone hopes to have a true friend in life. What can we do to find one? The only way to have a true friend is to be one ourselves. Poet To Huu once wrote:
“How can you borrow and not repay?
Life is about giving, not just taking for yourself.”
To sustain a lasting friendship, it's not just about taking; it’s about giving as well. A true friend cares for us and shares their life with us, and we must reciprocate with our actions. True friendship cannot exist with those who only give or only take. We must love and care for our friends as we would for ourselves. Help them without expecting anything in return, because at some point, we will receive help, not just from them, but from others in ways we least expect. Let’s give love selflessly, not for personal gain or selfish motives. True friendship isn’t about grand gestures, but small acts of kindness, such as a simple check-in via a message, a phone call, or an email. It’s the sincerity of the giver and receiver that makes it valuable.
We often think that once we become close to someone, we have the right to treat them any way we want, without thinking about their feelings. But this careless attitude can harm our closest friends in ways we may not realize. We must learn to be more mindful of the emotions of those we are closest to, for neglecting them can lead to the loss of our most precious friendships.
As the saying goes, “Those who can appreciate your strengths, understand your weaknesses, and are willing to overlook your mistakes at any moment, are your true friends.” Achieving such friendship is not easy, and once we have it, we must treasure it, protecting it with all our heart. Sometimes, people may act as our friends, but they are not truly our friends. For instance, when we are wealthy or well-connected, we may attract many people who want to befriend us, often for selfish reasons. But are they truly our friends? Or do they just seek to benefit from our position? A true friend stays by us when everything is gone, when wealth and status fade away. They remain when others have moved on.
In life, many things are fleeting and fragile, like castles of sand before the waves. But true, deep connections can withstand any storm. Nothing is more wonderful than giving our heart to another and feeling that love and care in return. A person’s heart becomes more beautiful when they learn to share, to love, and to help others. Love and marriage may come and go, but true friendship is forever. It stays by us when we need it most.
Friendship is precious, truly worth cherishing. True friendship will weather all the storms of life, providing a foundation for joy and happiness. It gives us faith, helps us face challenges, and pulls us back when we are about to fall. If everyone had such cherished friendships, life would be so much better. I hope everyone has at least one true friend to call their own.

6. Friendship
“Friendship!” Just saying that word in your head brings up a familiar face. Even if it’s been ages since you last spoke or met, you know that your friend is always there for you. Friendship sometimes feels very unfair. The people who love you, who are with you through thick and thin, might not even cross your mind as often as they should. Yet when your heart feels lost, you may find solace in someone you haven’t seen in a while, longing for a bit of peace. You can go an entire day without speaking, but a simple look from them tells you everything you need to know about the distance between you.
It’s as if a unique, unspoken connection exists between true friends—something that only life’s trials can truly build. You find comfort in simple, shared moments. Sitting together, like starving children who have been neglected, you realize that the little things you do for others are what make the most impact. The meals you cook, once a routine for your family, are also made with love for them. You laugh over little secrets, discussing things like homemade hair oils or beauty routines, as if time has never passed. The bond doesn’t need words—only presence.
The hardest part is saying goodbye, returning to the everyday chaos. You face it head-on, knowing there’s no escape. Yet, as you watch your friend walk away, you sense the same unease they carry within. The streets are crowded, but your heart is heavy, knowing they too are unsettled.
And then months or even years might go by without contact. You hear about them from others, but you long to just pick up the phone, only to hesitate, afraid that they might not answer. You know that eventually, they’ll reach out to you when life settles. Perhaps, it’s not about venting but simply sharing small joys like gossiping about celebrities or discussing books and culture. Time hasn’t broken the bond, and you realize how natural it is, even after so long.
In this life, no matter our wealth or status, everyone needs that one friend. The one who makes you feel warm just by thinking of them. The one who understands your silence and makes you smile without needing words.
And when we grow old, with silver hair and weary eyes, we’ll still greet each other with a simple “old friend.”
